The runes look worse by the day for the BBC Chairman

On the BBC helmsman’s account, this was a mere social favour – though revealing that a distant relative should regard Sharp as the best conduit for the request. None of this would matter, had it all not occurred shortly before Sharp’s appointment as BBC chairman, a role effectively in the gift of the PM.

This innocuous-sounding body features Tim Davie, the BBC’s Director General, and Arts Council England boss Nicholas Serota as the likely main inquisitors. Davie’s view in particular will be crucial. He and Sharp enjoy a “frenemy” relationship at the helm an organisation buffeted by cost-cutting, charges of bias and sporadic tug-of-war at the top over the range and limits of their respective roles.

More broadly, the rot revealed in the appointments system is captured in his “so-what?” response to the revelations that he introduced Blyth to Johnson.
