I do not see why a writer’s political leanings, however distasteful, should prevent independent acknowledgment of his literary art. I believe beauty can coexist with evil in a mind, and even transcend the individual. Little meritorious art is created within a political vacuum.

Nothing new here. They gave this award to Harold Pinter in 2005.
