NHS worker's ceiling collapses 'exposing her to asbestos' despite warnings

A grandma in her 60s was left with nowhere to stay after the fungi-covered ceiling of her West London flat caved in and potentially exposed her to asbestos poisoning. She has since been offered hotel accommodation

China Leung, 42, said her NHS worker mum notified the local council of a leak dripping through the ceiling over her bathroom at the start of August.Notting Hill Genesis Housing Association ignored the email, China said, and on Monday her mum's ceiling collapsed .

China's mum - a grandmother in her 60s - found a quarter of the ceiling of her home, in Ladbroke Grove, had dropped.Later, she was told that workmen couldn't touch the debris - which was covered in fungi - due to safety concerns about whether there was asbestos in the loft previously.

"The air is so thick and toxic, it’s coated the back of my throat and the taste also lingered," China said. China said the situation is "inhumane" for her elderly mum, who has chosen to remain anonymous, and who has worked like a "little soldier" through the pandemic. headtopics.com

She said: “My mum’s job itself has been stressing her out over the pandemic."She’s been a little soldier, but she suffers from depression and had to take some time off work recently, so I’ve been trying to help her out with this."And it’s taken over my life, worrying me sick and starting up my anxiety again. Imagine just having no answers."

The disrepair started with a leak, which discoloured the NHS worker's living room corner, before streams of water started gushing down the wall.Despite several chasing emails, the water wrecked China's mum's records and her "son's memories" in a yearbook.

One morning she woke up to find three mushrooms had sprouted from the ceiling overnight. Contacting the housing association didn't help, she said. She said: “Every morning it was wet inside the bathroom and water was trickling down the walls."My mum was going online and logging appointments but just no one would ever turn up.”

Someone finally came round to inspect the damage, and the family were told it would be sorted. But, there were no later visits. On Monday, China's son called her when he saw the "ceiling going" after a crack appeared overnight. When she called the housing association she was told a new emergency could not be raised because there was one already listed. headtopics.com

On the phone China told them the ceiling would cave in any minute, but the person on the other end "just hung up"."I was in tears," said China. It took under 20 minutes for the ceiling to come crashing down into her mum's flat. After the "awful" event China got back in touch with the housing association who now acknowledged something needed to be done- but it took until 10.45pm for someone to show up.

The workman told the family there could be asbestos present in the home, meaning no one can touch the wreckage until the situation is assessed.China says her mum and her young children are at risk after being "left here" in a wrecked flat with no working bathroom.

She added: “Nothing has been done. And no one wants to give us answers. It’s like pass the buck, with everything shirking responsibility onto everyone else like Genesis telling us they can’t get hold of the contractors."You’d think that someone should have at least come to check if things were safe after we originally reported a crack.”

China's mum took two days off work and lost around £200 in wages. After being contacted, Notting Hill Genesis said they had booked a hotel for China's mum and son to stay in.A spokesperson said: “We apologise that our service to the resident has fallen below the high standards we demand. headtopics.com

"We have provided the resident with hotel accommodation while we work with her to ensure her home is put right so she can move back in as soon as possible."We will investigate what went wrong in this case so we learn the lessons and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
