The attack on author Salman Rushdie in New York and fears that a lack of water will harm UK harvests lead the papers.

Many of the papers lead with the onstage stabbing in New York of author Sir Salman Rushdie, who since a 1989 fatwa issued by the then-Iranian leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, has been subject to death threats over his novel The Satanic Verses. The Daily Mirror reports that the 75-year-old was stabbed several times by a "heavy-set attacker" and that a suspect was in custody on Friday night.

The Times reports Sir Salman was stabbed up to 15 times by a masked man dressed in black, prompting gasps and shouts from members of the 2,500-strong audience, and that he had been due to speak about the US being a haven for persecuted writers. The Daily Mail is the first newspaper to carry a front page picture of the man named by New York State Police as the suspected attacker, 24-year-old Hadi Matar.

Speedy recovery Sir Rushdie. Terrible upset about your current situation.

The genuine opponents are multiplying in both numbers and ideologies while you continue to make up foes that don't exist in Russia. The demographics will be different when you wake up, and the change will be permanent.

Why do I get the impression the BBC is cracking out the Champagne over this attack by one of its religious masters.

You HOPE 'the drought ends in autumn'. (you can get dry autumn/winters too) This years harvest barely made it because we used bore-hole aquifers. They will need to be replenished if you want to rely on it next year.

Why is Salman Rushdie so controversial?Rushdie's first three novels - Grimus (1975), Midnight's Children (1981) and Shame (1983) - were all met with praise but it was his fourth - The Satanic Verses - that brought criticism. It’s just a book He isn't controversial. He is hated just because he used his freedom of speech to criticise Islam. I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Perfect timing you gits.
