An abandoned stretch of dual carriageway has seen tonnes of rubbish illegally dumped over years.

The authority said it has issued a further five fixed penalty notices for fly-tipping and seized two vehicles involved in similar offences.

Enhanced security and CCTV will remain in place at the site while local community group, Friends of the Road to Nature, has adopted the land for future use.Deputy council leader Roger Jeavons said: "We know clean streets are a priority for the people of Newport and we share their frustration at seeing criminals illegally dump waste on our streets."Along with our recent work to identify and prosecute fly-tippers, it shows that we will not tolerate these acts in our city.

"We also want the community to reclaim this space once it has been cleared. To that end, I'm delighted that the Friends of the Road to Nature group has already adopted the space.

Winter Covid wave won’t be as bad as last year – even without ‘Plan B’📉 Modelling suggests hospital admissions will be nowhere near highs of January unless transmission soars and immunity wanes Paul Hunter's eccentric predictions and his encouragement of endemic Covid 19 seems puzzling. Are Sars 1, smallpox, polio, measles, rubella, tetanus and mumps endemic? Are the long-term effects of Covid a suitable price to pay for this? As someone who lives in New Zealand, the attitude displayed by this article only demonstrates the UK's poor Covid response in its unwillingness to uphold any duty of care. It seems to celebrate this callous sacrifice of lives all for the sake of preserving a perverse ideology.
