“We have been shocked at what we have seen during the trial,” says Warwickshire Police inspector

A trial of road safety technology being deployed in the UK for the first time has led to hundreds of motorists being caught breaking traffic laws, with a senior roads policing officer saying he is “shocked” at the number of offences recorded.

The force says that more than 216 Notices of Intended Prosecution were issued as a result of the initiative. “Drivers who talk on phones, both hands-free and hand-held, are four times more likely to be in a crash resulting in injuries. “We have seen one driver with his phone to his ear and his other hand to his face so none on the steering wheel, and two separate drivers with no seatbelts on who were also using handheld phones.

bigsioda do the police have their collective heads in the sand. Almost all drivers knowingly break the law while driving, the rest don't know what the law is. This is not news

I'd wear a 'plate' on my bike if it included this technology. It'd cut back dangerous driving around cyclists. I'd be 100% behind that. I'd be 100% behind it fining me for unsafe cycling. I'm done with bad judgement, let the AI take over.

I'm shocked that they caught motorists breaking the law once every 6 minutes rather than once every 6 seconds

If the police inspector is shocked at this level of driving offences then he has taken his eye off the ball and hasn't been doing his job properly. It has been obvious for years that driving standards have deteriorated badly, along with driver attitudes.

Is anyone else...not really shocked?

Not news to anyone who cycles or pays attention while driving.

Who on earth doesn't wear a seatbelt today? That should be an instant 3 month ban for being so careless.

Catching people putting others' lives at risk sounds like a great idea. Wait, it's MOTORISTS you're trying to catch? That's just revenue raising.

Cyclists across the country go like...not really surprised, are we now.

In Leeds daily on my cycle commute, I see about a dozen mobile phones to ears, many more when lights go red, automatically put their mobile/tablet on the steering wheel and message/text.

Drivers in driving dangerously shocker!

see at least 10 people on their mobiles every day on my 20 min cycle commute. thats one every 2 mins i actually see.

I’m not. I see this daily whether I’m travelling by car or motorcycle. I also wonder if there has been an increase in RSI to the neck with the amount of people looking down at there phone, why anyone thinks holding a phone by their leg disguises what they’re doing is beyond me

We don’t need tech. Just provide cyclist a bounty for video showing drivers breaking these laws.

Really? Which roads do they normally drive? They can try to East London they don’t need fancy equipment just open eyes.

I'm not shocked by this, in fact I'm not surprised at all. Until there is more people caught and punished adequately (and actually banned) nothing will change

Do you know what would be shocking? That you actually enforced the law and that all those demonstrably dangerous repeat offenders were not welcome back behind the wheel. That would be a shock. That would help.

Can this spot drivers half anaesthetised with nitrous?

Allow the Police to keep all the money from fines and just watch how proactive they become. You could easily fund a specialised traffic division in most forces from fines alone.

Nobody who regularly rides a bike past traffic is shocked unless they're surprised that the numbers were so low. One every six minutes? Dreaming. One in two more like it.

I still don’t understand why people refuse to wear seatbelts.

MikeyCycling I’m not shocked

Have been living in a cave for the last 10 years?

dont know why they are shocked . walk passed any queue of traffic and there will be plenty of drivers looking at there phones .

My grandad used to have a theory. He reckoned that everyone in the car should wear a seatbelt, except for the driver. They should be prohibited from wearing a seatbelt, and in addition, there should be a massive steel spike sticking out of the middle of the steering wheel. He 1/2

Sadly, magistrates will often allow these potential killers to continue driving. Policing technology is great, but we need the legal system to stop protecting killer motorists.

Are you really surprised? A large proportion of motorists have always routinely & repeatedly broken traffic laws

MikeyCycling Sounds like a good piece of tech, hopefully the end is coming for those using their mobile devices while driving.

If Merseysidersp MerPolTraffic had this is would melt down in an hour !!! I walk past traffic every day and at least 90% are on there phones ! Including Busses and Coaches and HGVs

I don't think a police inspector is genuinely shocked. It's possible that this is a carefully calibrated message to drivers who still think that the majority of drivers are great law abiding drivers. Sort of a 'These stats are shocking, please pay attention!'

Any police inspector who is 'shocked' at how poor driving standards are, has probably not been paying attention.

But but something about cyclists and red lights but.

if they're shocked, they haven't been paying attention

They must be new around here. Plenty of us drivers see loads of other drivers flouting the law. Some of it is caught on our dashcam, occasionally the pice act on that footage.

Only a shock if they never drive or cycle on the roads round here! I don't expect the sensors pick up those who huff nitrous oxide or smoke skunk whilst driving...

Imagine being so out of touch with your job, you are shocked to find out a little bit about it. Then imagine being so stupid you admit it, then imagine the whole service is so bad, nobody thinks to sack you.

I am not shocked…..but it’s cyclists that are the problem eh?

Superb, now all the police need is the crusty old justice system to back it up with bans when 12 points are reached. Using a phone or not using a seatbelt is just plain stupid
