New Highway Code rules are ‘dangerous and divisive’, blast motoring experts

Drivers should give 5ft when overtaking cyclistCyclists either side of vehicle have priority when cars are turningThe Dutch Reach is a simple technique to make sure doors are being opened as safely as possibleHoward Cox co-founder of FairFuel UKThe guidance that drivers should keep a minimum of 1.5 metres from a cyclist when overtaking doesn’t take account of speed and conditions.

It doesn’t say a pedestrian or cyclist has no responsibility. In fact, this places a greater responsibility on cyclists. It isn’t delaying anybody if I adopt a central lane position when we’re all travelling at the same speed. The other big issue is that the existing Highway Code told drivers to leave as much space for cyclists as they would for a car when overtaking.“The one and a half metre gap rule is ‘guidance’ and will depend on different situations, such as when both are pulling away from traffic lights.

Last night in the pitch dark I came up behind a cyclist literally in the middle of the road with no lights& wearing dark clothes. So do I have to wait until he;gets where he’s going or get knocked of his bike before attempting to give him a 5mile clearance before overtaking?

Ridiculous, even when there's cycle lanes you don't have to use them

What a stupid idea just as bad as smart motorways they would be dangerous if they had brains
