Women held for protesting against a military takeover say they were sexually assaulted and tortured.

Women in Myanmar have been tortured, sexually harassed and threatened with rape in custody, according to accounts obtained by the BBC.

Soe May old the BBC that one morning, while making placards for a protest, she was arrested and bundled into the back of a van. When she didn't give them details of her contacts, they made her open her mouth and "forced the loaded revolver inside it", she said.According to Manny Maung, Myanmar researcher at Human Rights Watch , interrogation centres "could be anything from makeshift holding sites, a room in a military barrack or even an abandoned public building".

The lawyer described a legal system in Myanmar as opaque, and where attorneys like her are sometimes powerless. Another woman, who was taken to an interrogation centre in Shwe Pyi Thar township, said: "They pulled the girls out of the room. Some girls came back with some buttons on their clothes undone or missing."The BBC put Soe May's testimony to Myanmar's Information Deputy Minister Maj Gen Zaw Min Tun, who denied any torture was being carried out by the military and dismissed it as "fake news".

‘It’s soul-crushing’: the shocking story of Guantánamo Bay’s ‘forever prisoner’In Alex Gibney’s harrowing documentary, the tale of Abu Zubaydah, seen as patient zero for the CIA’s torture programme, is explored with horrifying new details Not acknowledged enough is Obama, instead of capturing suspects & imprisoning them in Guantanamo like Bush, vastly expanded drone assassinations, instead. Yes, Bush tortured suspects. But Obama KILLED them outright w. no trial, along w/anyone else in the vicinity. Which is worse? 'Zubaydah, never charged with a crime or allowed to challenge his detention, is incarcerated at the Guantánamo Bay prison camp.' His point, thru' attorneys is war in Afghanistan is over. Charge with crimes/take to court. In forever limbo seems extreme even for a 'terrorist'
