Shares Baby Rowan caught his parents off guard (Picture: BPM MEDIA) A shocked mum gave birth on the backseat of an Uber on a dual carriageway, minutes from a hospital. Baby Rowan arrived bang on his due date – but not quite in the location his parents Dan, 31, and Ella, 32, imagined. The dramatic incident started when the couple phoned University Hospital Coventry to say Ella could be in labour around 1am on January 8. ‘I called the hospital twice and the first time we weren’t really sure what was happening,’ university lecturer Dan said. Ella was told to have a bath and drink some water but Dan rang back an hour later when things ‘seemed to be getting heavier’. He said: ‘They said come in and we will have a look but we may have to send you away. It didn’t feel like we were in that much of a rush so we called an Uber.’ But Rowan made his entrance into the world slightly earlier than anticipated. Dan was on the phone to West Midlands Ambulance Service when Ella caught the newborn in her hands. I didn’t do any pushing at all – I was trying not to push. ‘I didn’t want him to be born in an Uber. I caught him, he was pink and screaming. ‘Despite the panic in my mind I was thinking okay he was clearly fine as he was screaming.’ Asked if it was a scary experience Dan said: ‘It was, quite, but I think we both don’t quite 100% remember.’ A few minutes after the birth, an ambulance pulled up and a response car blocked the road. Rowan is healthy and happy, although had to be put on a heat pad and under a lamp as he was cold. Amid all the mayhem was Imran, the Uber driver, who has been named a ‘hero’ by the new parents. More:
