The study on projected earnings, based on tax data, shows wide variations in the financial winners and losers between different subjects, once the cost of going to university has been deducted.Medicine will bring an extra £340,000 for women, economics £270,000 and £260,000 for law
More women go to university than men - and a higher proportion of women, 85%, compared with 75% of men, will get a positive financial return. Ben Waltmann, of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, said the public finances gained on average from higher education,"because high-earning graduates go on to pay an awful lot of tax".
And these findings are published as the government prepares its response to Philip Augar's review of student finance. This recommended that tuition fees should be cut to £7,500 and that students needed better value for money. "Earnings potential is also heavily impacted by factors such as an individual's background, their parents' jobs, their gender, where they are from and where they live after graduating," says union leader Jo Grady.
"Young people are being pressured to go to university without any consideration given to whether the experience will be positive or if they'll be equipped to pursue the career they want," he said.
University isn’t just about getting the degree though. It’s a life lesson, independence, self sufficiency, Organization, time management away from your usual support network- all things that help you to become a far more attractive employee. As well as the degree 💜
Hehehe I wish 🤣
Did the 'boy blunder' Richard Burgess go to university?
Brilliant, they should have no problems paying back their student loans then! 👍🏻
“Over their working lives... average gain by... female graduates by £100,000.” Assuming a a 3 year course at £9k per year and £9k maintenance loan, at the end of it all you earn £46k over your life. £1,000 per year of work for your degree. Less once you’re charged 5% interest...
So you going to up fees then to counter it
Only 1 in 5? I assess the figure as approx double that. At least 40% of current attendees 'in suo anno', so to speak are running up vast debt -taking worthless non-degrees in 'phony' subjects, and/or -are not intellectually fit to profit from HE level courses anyway
Funny how the same news gets different treatment.
You make it sound like a bad thing...?
Namely because to get a admin assistant job now you need a degree, or you cant compete. Putting even entry level jobs out of the reach of those who havent a degree.
Only STEM!
