Students from more than 50 universities across the UK are taking part in a rent strike in protest over how the pandemic has affected their studies.
Many courses have moved to remote learning which has caused some students to move back home rather than stay in university or privately owned accommodation. Poor mental health is also a big concern. The Higher Education regulator is now calling for more financial and emotional support for students.
All of these landlords could take mortgage holidays for those properties and pause rent for the students. They're just chosing not to.
🤔 I am not sure that will end well.
DerwentStudents hey look ur on da telly gimme my money back or i'm movin elsewhere next year
We are all paying for sh*t we're not using. Roads (my car didn't start the other day as it hasn't been used) and school buildings spring to mind. Are we all going to pay less tax to make up for it?
If the govt would of even mentioned Uni students ! It would feel that they are actually valued , after working hard to get there !
Clearly no student should pay anything for accommodation that they aren’t using due to lockdowns
Just imagine what its like for the parents who actually have responsibility for other people rather than just themselves! I have no choice but to house and feed 4 people!!! I was working from a young age and haven't stopped - grow up!!

seems very unfair particularly if its university owed.
You should read the terms carefully when you sign a contract.
No worries..don't pay..just remember to take all your 💩 with you when you close the door behind you..You can't live anywhere for free..
Welcome to the real world.
This is terrible they aren't even getting the full experience of university at least refund their money.
I’m sorry, but if you’ve entered into a contract and then chosen to move home for lockdown, that’s not the landlords problem. If I had been trapped abroad during lockdown, for example, I’d still have to pay my rent. It’s called life. And yes I do have child at uni currently.
If they had booked a holiday away from home the students would have been refunded. The students have booked property away from home but are not allowed to return to the university soI don't see the difference. refundthestudents
Can't say I blame them, why should they pay for accomodationthey are not using
Hard reality having to be the bill payer. Rent strike? hoping for a handout; no doubt the gov will give one. But don't pay bills you will likely find you won't be watching crap tv either as likely bailiffs when they come knocking will be the first thing they miss.
Recycling old news zzzzzzzzz. DefundTheBBC
What a shame for them - if they hadn’t been so selfish having student parties, not social distancing from others and spreading the virus in our major cities they could have used their accommodation! All this is on their own selfish heads - they reap what they sow! 🤣🤣🤣
Disgraceful the way students are being conned by having no direct contact with tutors and having to pay the full price and having to pay for accomodation that they are not using. They are certainly paying a high price for protecting the elderly population now and in the future,
So helpful of them
It's pretty much affected everybody I'm afraid.
Yes i am one of the students affected.
Do they actually pay or is it money from their students loans?
I will now have to pay extra taxes for furlough I have never had
How will this affect their credit rating?
There isn’t a pandemic. The govt’s reaction to a cold virus has affected their studies.
Young people are being short changed on almost every level and students are being totally ripped off. Previous generations (including mine 57) have put themselves before a balanced society for too long.
Literally who cares, you signed a contract.
They wanted your money university only wipe the asses of those who matter to then and students don't.
Unfortunately that is how the world works. Sign a contract and you are stuck with it, like it or not.
During the first lockdown, i had to battle with my accommodation company over getting a reduced rent/cancelled (they cancelled others rent, but were refusing to do the same for me due to a communication error on their end). Eventually gave in, but these people really don’t care..
If you follow me I will 100%💯💯💯💯💯💯%%💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯%💯💯%%💯💯💯follow back
My son is getting his rent refunded for the time he has not been able to attend university. Just saying
BBCSheffield Don't pay it...
🙄
So far I’ve paid £4900 out of the £6500 and I have slept there for 4 nights total. Student finance underpaid me £2500 so now I cannot even afford it and I’m stuck because there are no jobs going... also I’m in my third year so the stress is real and it really is a dark place.. 😔
The worst thing that could happen to someone managing student halls isn't students not paying their rent. Meh, you still get paid and go home on time.. If they refused to leave at the end of their contract? The whole system falls apart very quickly.
BBCSheffield Apart from they aren't paying for it, it's added to Student Debt, which likely won't be paid in full so the taxpayer picks up the bill. Moi.....again.
It's time to shut them nonstop paying
A lot of universities are more interested in making money than providing education. The pandemic has just opened our eyes. How can you justify £9000 student fees for 1 year academic? This is a pure robbery.
So! many people are losing jobs through no fault of their own. Do you think they are rebelling in paying their mortgage? Entitled generation!
New Labours legacy of pushing every Tom, Dick & Mohammed into University is backfiring on a generation. Creating debt slaves and ideological clones (especially those of whom who study the humanities).
Go to sainsburys buy a pint of milk. Then go and stay at your mums forgetting about the milk Return to your fridge 4 weeks later, milk gone off. Take it to sainsburys ask for your money back 🤷🏼♂️
My daughter is at London uni and has not be there since 1st November. Everything has been on line since Sept she is still paying her room yet living back gone with family. It’s disgraceful students are not getting financial support or rebates.
Nothing has been done for university students in private rental, landlords refuse to reduce or cancel rent, students were lied too and told blended learning, students are paying rent while in lockdown at home causing debt and stress, university is responsible, and should step up
You know what could stop this is to call a stop to all these lockdowns and restrictions and I for one fully support the students in this protest, hope it succeeds
I'm paying for a car that is not being used. We are all in the same boat
Surely they new this was a possibility?
I hope they remember when they vote at the next election.
That's exactly like having to pay the BBC to watch live non-BBC TV channels. That's why I say DefundTheBBC DefundBBC
Its just a business, it was always just a business
Behind them all the way, student accommodation overpriced even without covid situation....
lol
rent strikes are illegal- throw em in jail!
