'Mindless' attack after road row leaves granddad lying in street with broken jaw

Dennis Crowe, 72, was walking home in Eccles, Salford, when he claims a young motorist sped round the corner and almost hit him, before a confrontation saw the pensioner savagely beaten

Dennis Crowe had challenged a motorist who "nearly hit him" with his car, before things reportedly turned violent.The 72-year-old had been walking home from the pub when a speeding Astra came shooting round the corner, leading to the pensioner confronting the driver.

He was punched twice during the incident in Ellesmere Park, Eccles, on Friday evening, reports the Manchester Evening News.An ambulance was then only called after a passer-by rushed to help Mr Crowe.He is in hospital in a stable condition awaiting surgery but has been left unable to speak properly.

Mr Crowe's loved ones are appealing for anyone with information speak to police.Son Mark told the newspaper: "He went to Eccles to put some electric on his meter then stopped in the pub on the way home."He was walking back along Chatsworth Road in Ellesmere Park - it was only about 6pm.

"He was crossing the road when he said some young lad in an Astra came speeding around the corner and nearly hit him."He said he and the lad had words... my dad told him he'd nearly ran him over."The lad gave him some abuse out of the window so my dad gave him the Vs and the lad drove off.

"Then he's come around the corner and the lad's there waiting for him in his car. He's got out of his car, walked over to my dad and punched him twice, breaking his jaw, twice."He's then left him on the floor and driven off."

Mark said his dad is well-known in Eccles, having lived there for over 40 years."Everyone is shocked," he added. "It's a disgusting crime and I don't know what went through his head to break an old man's jaw."Mark said doctors told Mr Crowe he'll be in hospital for another three or four days. He can't have visitors because of the Covid pandemic.

"He's now got to stay in there on his own," Mark continued."We don't know when we can next see him."In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at around 12.55pm on Saturday 26 September 2020 to reports of an assault on Portland Road in the Eccles area of Salford.
