Housing shortage: Scale of UK's housing gap revealed

In a poll of more than 2,000 people for the Affordable Housing Commission, 13% of adults said their mental health was affected by their housing situation.

Despite having a good job with a charity, Zoe feels her quality of life has hardly improved since her early 20s.The BBC's Housing Briefing estimates that we have built 1.2 million fewer homes than we should have The calculations suggest it will take at least 15 years at current building rates to close the gap, and that not enough of what is being built is affordable.Hannah Clark from Oxfordshire, now aged 32, has been saving since she was 14 in the hope of being able to put down a deposit on something affordable.

Funny thing is, this has happened to every generation. There is always a housing shortage. Me and my wife moved in with her parents until we saved a deposit. You have to make sacrafices to get a home.

Our council have agreed a developer can build in our local area. They are lovely houses on a lovely estate. Starting prices £750,000. Brilliant. Just what's needed of course. 😮😳🙄.

Use brownfield made good land. USS places sitting empty. Wish we could tax to the hikt homes /land sitting empty whilst people/developers sit on it waiting for its value to increase.

There’s not a shortage of houses, it’s too many people. Hospitals at stretching point, schools struggling, police are struggling, roads are constantly grid locked. I wonder where all these extra millions of people have come from. 🤔

SNP delivering 86,000+ affordable homes across Scotland and 5000+ planned for Glasgow Also improved tenantrights firesafety Shame on Tory austerity for housingcrisis England

Don’t understand why this is ‘news’ - it’s been an epic problem since c2004. Two generations are struggling now.

Perhaps housing associations should let properties to people who are in REAL need. House next to me been empty for 8 months.

But mass immigration has nothing to do with it..this is the BBC remember..

Nonesense

Immigration policies, are a problem on this...cost to budgets in security and other critical infrastructure...No way to keep up with the demands & extreme impacts of hostile diversity, & unmanagable high density populations...

Uncontrolled immigration for over 10 years, what do you expect? Ludicrous house prices, council houses sold off. Stop bloody building on greenfield sites, especially here in Kent, there won't be any green left at the current rate!

Stop people owning 100 bloody rental properties and sort out and regulate air bnb in major cities and towns and build on brown field sites! Ffs it’s not hard

I really don’t believe the Zoe story! It makes no economic sense to “no fault” evict a tenant, it’s very time consuming and costly and is not a simple process. Also, why does each eviction cost her £1k? This case needs explaining more, it’s far too simplistic!

Not enough houses, not enough schools, not enough hospital beds, not enough doctors, not enough nurses, not enough motorways, not enough buses, not enough trains... anyone that maybe there is too many people!!!!

So about 4 years worth of net migration. Who'd have thought!

and there will be an even more shortage if we don't control our borders, one of the reasons we voted TO LEAVE YOUR EU.

It is population growth , plain and simple! We can't cope.

Come to Scotland it's a lot more affordable up here and we are always on the look out for bright young talent.

Nothing that deporting a few hundred thousand layabouts won't cure

Whilst one is living rent free & has disposable income to save for a deposit, both live in an expensive part of the country. If they wanted to buy a house, they could move to a cheaper area.

We don’t have a housing shortage we have an immigration problem!!

MrGeorgeClarke

It's a population problem not a housing problem

If the government would just build more houses for the hundreds of thousands of extra people who move to the UK every year then there would be no shortage. 😔

Hannah can't bring a partner back to her property? She needs to have a word with her family, what's their problem? Surely she's allowed a partner at 32

The starting point is to sort the planning system.
