Chunky microphones are now as much a part of the gamer aesthetic as racing chairs.

barely even existed yet—if you were attending QuakeCon and wanted to inspire a roiling envy among your fellow PC elitists, your best bet was a garish, chromed-out case. You know what I'm talking about: the crystalline chassis, the glittering water cooling kits, the monolithic fans that sounded like a spaceship taking off. This was the threshold that every up-and-coming geek was expected to aspire to.

Microphones have morphed from a fringe boutique curiosity to an out-an-out necessity. Our battlestations look sad and malnourished without them. As a zoomer, Andrew is at the forefront of the generational turnover within the PC contingency. He wanted a microphone superior to the chintzy plastic headsets that remained the standard among matchmaking queues throughout the 2000s and 2010s. But as gamers became celebrities in the latter half of the decade—as the stereotype shifted from basement-dwelling grognard towards a Kool Aid-dyed teen in an LA mansion—so too did the men and women in their wake.

"I think that all the kids want a 'complete' streaming setup like they see their favorite streamers online have. So whether or not they use it for streaming or just casually, it’s become a part of a complete setup," says another poster on r/Battlestations, who opted for a $99 Blue Yeti."I think it has everything to do with wanting to be like the streamers they look up to.

About as stupid as RGB

streamers are not gamers

Yeah you can get a “chunky” mix for under £100 which will significantly cheaper NFT ease the quality of it.

no

I totally disagree with that take, it’s not neccesity to have chunky mics, necessity is to have good sounding one, whether it’s condenser mic, or just a headset one. There are good sounding cheap usb mics that can be recommended to anyone who doesn’t care about pro sound

You mean… good sound quality?

I don't care about mics, get me that thing Snoop Dogg is using to play games with one hand on twitch.

. you see a little late to the game on this one.. Also, turn a $100 Shure SM57 into the Holy Grail Shure SM7B

Any recommendation for microphones? I want to record Podcast.

I’m a studio guy. That’s an absolutely killer microphone. Perfect for guitar amps, bass drums, Thom Yorke’s vocals and gamers chatting about cheat codes.

You mean condensers? It's simply people wanting better quality. You wouldn't stream with a dynamic mic. You want a condenser to pick up on your voice's audio waves better.

You’ll be surprised how good the small ones.

Rolf

Indeed

It’s not about the size it’s about how you use it. That being said, I run a Rode Procaster just because the rear rejection is insanely good and you don’t hear keyboard or mouse noise. Dynamics just make more sense. Also fuck gaming chairs. Office chair gang rise up.

Why is this a story

It's not aesthetic symbols showing 'status', it's functional.

Racer chairs are cancer

I don't get it. I've never thought that I needed to record my voice and make podcasts or videos.

How about gaming skill? My skill is bigger than your microphone.

Get an office chair, they are actually comfortable and not made like trash.

'chunky' microphones? lmao, broadcast quality microphones aren't some flimsy shit. They have good capsules, transformers, isolation material, construction etc and most importantly sound. EV, Rode, Shure, AT, AKG have been in the industry for decades and their products last.

Lol fuck that I've used a shotgun mic for years now and it's so nice not having to have a mic in your face while casting.

No they aren't and I hardly called twitch streamers gamers

lilToastyToast LOL you are very fashionable

And yet all streamers buy that cliche big mic but it always sounds like shit learn to tune the mic assholes

For streamers I guess, but there are many more gamers who don't stream.

I got a $35 RGB condenser microphone that's basically on par with a blue yeti and beats most if not all headset microphones USB mics are mid overall though they still do a pretty good job but XLR is where it's at (like the one Poki is using in the pic)

What does a mic do in a game

I mean, alot of those 'chunky' microphones are popular because of their sound quality.. the 2020, sm7b, procaster, etc are all top quality sounding mics. In my opinion it's not a status thing, it's streamers improving their setups to bring the best quality they can to viewers.

😬

I’m always peeved by streamers that point their mics the wrong direction so that they can show off the logo instead of using it as intended for better voice recording.

Why is this streamer being pushed so hard by the big tech oligarchs?

Status updated

If you buy a $400 Shure microphone then you instantly get tons of Twitch views, definitely a real fact.

fuck those chairs

Sure let me just buy this 400 dollars mic so that I'd look more like a 'gamer'

This just shows the evolution of both the gaming and streaming categories. Coveting a mic you saw a pro streamer use is no different than buying a pair of shoes or a racquet that a pro athlete uses.

what? its nice for everyone when you have good mic quality

I mean alot of them are better then a headset so no surprise I wanna invest in one myself some day

This article was written by someone who doesn’t stream, and has zero prescient knowledge of broadcasting equipment.

“Content creators invest in professional quality production equipment. Journalists shocked to find other streamers following suit.” Fixed your headline.

Can’t wait for all the future crummy mics to be extra chunky because of the aesthetic

Well good thing I have one of those then

Absolutely unnecessary trend, just like with the chairs. I don't care what something looks like, it should work properly and have a decent use. It annoys me anyway when I see the microphone more than the streamer. 🤷🏼‍♂️

*Reel Big Fish 'Trendy' playing in the distance*

You mean that corporations have begun to push that narrative through the content creators they bankroll in an effort to get you to part with your money. Unless you're a professional creator, any quality headset will sound the same

Mines chunkier

Rate my setup

Chunky? You mean condenser mics that don't sound like shit? I've used one for years.
