Bosnia's Srebrenica massacre 25 years on - in pictures

"All who wish to go will be transported, large and small, young and old. Don't be afraid... No one will harm you."In less than two weeks, their forces systematically murdered more than 8,000 Bosniaks - the worst act of mass killing on European soil since the end of World War Two.

Lightly-armed UN peacekeepers, in what had been declared a UN"safe area", did nothing as the violence raged around them. The massacre was part of a genocide committed against the Muslims by Bosnian Serb forces during the Bosnian War, one of several conflicts fought in the 1990s as Yugoslavia imploded.

Bosnia-Herzegovina declared its independence in 1992 following a referendum, and was recognised shortly afterwards by the US and European governments. But the Bosnian Serb population had boycotted the referendum. Soon afterwards Bosnian Serb forces - supported by the Serbian government - attacked the newly formed country.

Ruthanasia Where is the reporting on the massacres in Palestine? The 2,000 false arrests in the occupied West Bank? The 2,200 deaths in 2014, in Gaza, including over 500 children? Sanctions Justice PalestinianLivesMatter

and who can forget how the BBC portrayed it as 'both sides are engaging in violence.'

Sadly there is a big chance that the UK knows a little bit more about the purposely fall of Srebrenica in 1995... Maybe time after 25 years for the UK government to let us know a little more about that?! contactgroup Srebrenica25 OperationStorm

Spineless UN peacekeeping force. post WW2, Europes darkest moment.

Christians are in 2020 the most persecuted religious group on this planet and the perpetrators of these atrocities are mainly Muslims.

A picture paints a thousand sad words. Given bbc subbing on certain other anniversaries, maybe just as well.

Not the Dutch Army's finest hour. Shaming incident for a proud nation.

This is a Massacre!!! But the bbc didn't describe the Islamic terrorist attack on a London bus in the same way... An explosion!!! You are a disgrace scummedia

It was a genocide according to UN

The horrors of war. The UN peacekeepers who appeared not to understand what was happening before there eyes. When I went to Sarajevo I visited the small museum to learn about the seige and events. I came out in shock. Such a nasty war. The world never learns though.

What 😔

Shameful that this happened under the noses of governments who chose to ignore.

May the victims family and friends have the courage to overcome this brutality

Not much changed since then, Europeans still has similar motivations

Opinion: 25 years after the Srebrenica massacre, the merits of foreign intervention are clearer than everAfter Iraq and Libya, the concept of protection may seem tainted – but this weekend’s anniversary is a vital reminder that a policy of concerted inaction can have equally disastrous results Cool. So when can we expect to free the Palestinians? Yep, every single intervention by the West has been so successful hasn't it? Intervention is characterised by painting one side evil and the other victims, regardless of reality. Its why Kosovo led to the ethnic cleansing of minorities by the KLF under NATO protection. Cheers

Genocide denial gains ground 25 years after Srebrenica massacreEven as remains continue to be identified, denialism is moving from far-right fringe into mainstream I don't know if that's frightening or if it pisses me off. Oh look another genocide overshadowed by the Holocaust The continued attacks on International Courts from USA, sponsored by Russia, China and UAE, are giving a free pass to this tragedy and many others. Political interest are above human rights on these times.
