The judges of this year’s Booker prize have “explicitly flouted” the rules of the august literary award to choose the first joint winners in almost 30 years: Margaret Atwood and Bernardine Evaristo.
You had to call the black woman's novel 'obscure' in favour of the white woman who's won the award before? Lol.
Fantastic to see this sallypenni1 our founder would be pleased
Evaristo says it was all down to the judges being all women apart from one man & she wants more juries of that kind. Fairness and impartiality?
This wasn't a difficult choice. Atwood has already won this before. Bernadine deserved it. You weren't breaking the rules. You were merely holding on to your white privilege even while honoring a black writer.
Demonstrates how pointless it is to turn literature into a competition.
One day I hope to see a man win the Booker. Admittedly he'd have to be a milquetoast mouthing the right platitudes, but still. We now live in an age of post-quality awards were those platitudes and attitudes outvalue the art to the judges.
Congratulations BernardineEvari Fantastic news!
Love this
wow
'I'm very pleased that you're here too' - this is the quote of the year
Well done Women!
*clutches pearls vigorously* but the rules!
Trash.
