‘The NHS is working closely with the CPS and the police to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice and face the full force of the law.’Emergency medicine consultant and associate medical director at Homerton, Dr Emma Rowland, said: ‘We are glad our nurse is recovering well and appreciate the support we received from our local police.

‘Our staff are working under intense pressure and these kinds of incidents are not only saddening but also increase the strain we are all under.’ The attack came after Crown Prosecution Service figures released on Thursday revealed assaults on emergency workers were the most common coronavirus-related crimes prosecuted in the first six months of the pandemic.

Some 1,688 such offences were charged between April 1 and September 30, following the UK’s first national lockdown, including police officers being ‘coughed and spat on’ and others being ‘kicked, bitten and hit with heavy objects’, the CPS said.
