A man who spent 16 years in jail for the rape of award-winning author Alice Sebold has been exonerated after a producer working on a film of the writer’s memoir spotted glaring inconsistencies.
‘I just hope and pray that maybe Ms Sebold will come forward and say, “Hey, I made a grave mistake” and give me an apology,’ Mr Broadwater said. ‘I sympathise with her, but she was wrong.’ His doubts were not about Sebold’s assault, but about the trial ‘which didn’t hang together’, he told the New York Times.
Mr Hammond told CNN that he and a colleague listened to the transcript of the trial and found ‘serious legal issues’, prompting them to file a motion to have the conviction overturned. He broke down as the conviction was finally overturned District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said he was ‘not going to sully this proceeding by saying, “I’m sorry”.’Broadwater spent his life protesting his innocent, and tried five times to get the conviction overturned before Monday’s decision.
Sebold went to police, but she didn’t know the man’s name and an initial sweep of the area failed to find him. An officer suggested the man in the street must have been Broadwater, who had supposedly been seen in the area.
Disgusting woman to make money out of writing about rape and causing an innocent man to suffer - can’t have been that traumatic. How many more women have done something similar and how many men have suffered and are still suffering. Thank goodness the truth has been revealed.
