"[But] when you drive around Bristol, it's quite embarrassing to see places like Blackboy Hill and Whiteladies Road, and Colston being celebrated. Meanwhile a 316-year-old portrait of Colston was today removed from the Lord Mayor's parlour at Bristol's City Hall. The toppling of the statue of Colston in Bristol on Sunday has led to demands for other historic monuments to be removed. It was fetched from Bristol harbour this morning.

Campaigners have also challenged memorials to Sir Robert Peel, founder of the Met Police in London and former prime minister William Gladstone. There are fears hundreds are planning to attend a "patriotic unity" event at Churchill's statue in Westminster on Saturday morning.

I shared my home with Edward Colston for more than 20 years. Good riddanceThe toppling of the statue was a win for multiracial, radical Bristol – and the whole of the UK. Now it must face up to its shameful role in the slave trade He’s still there. History doesn’t change. I thought it was good to see so many people getting exercise. Clever of our ancestors to leave these statues about the place, to entice us to occasionally spend a day taking brisk exercise Cultural vandal.
