Specialist health professionals say obesity should be regarded as a complex illness, and people with the condition shouldn't be blamed for it.

Specialist health professionals say it is time for obesity to be regarded as an illness caused by genetics, biology and how we live today.

"People think you're unintelligent, that you're lazy, that you eat too much, that you've done this to yourself. That it's a choice," she says. "I just want to scream and say none of those things are right." At the time, it made her feel "brilliant". But, in hindsight, she realises this was the start of years and years of yo-yo dieting.

Around this time, she had some tests which looked at her genetic make-up. The results found two important things: "I think there's something about the psychological experiences people have, and the relationships that they start to form with foods, that becomes almost like a perfect storm." After training for the triathlon and losing eight-and-a-half stone, Sarah continued to train regularly and eat well. But she noticed that gradually she started to become heavier. Whatever she did, it made no difference.

As Sarah started to research obesity, she realised that after a lifetime of blaming herself, she understood that it was actually her body "working against her".New research from a team made up of specialists from the University of Birmingham, the University Hospitals of Birmingham, and Warwick Medical School, has found that people living with obesity have a 66% higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease than those with normal body weight.

"The number of people I've encountered in my 30-year career who've been able to go from morbid obesity, to normal weight, and sustain it by dieting alone - well I don't think I've ever met one. It's so hard to do."

nothing wrong with your ability two straw water...'ANGEL'.....FACT..LOVE IS YOIR'S..

Let's get this right I am 11lbs over wieght because I was LAZY during the covid winter and I ate sh!t .. nothing to do with genes.. Humans were meant to chase their prey and run so they were no longer pray get over it and quit making excuses own up

Wow! A serious majority of judgemental, unsympathetic & unhelpful comments here. Obviously these readers/commentators missed the point of the article.

We have weight control program for your lifetime not the quick fix and involves No Exercise or Counting Calories both are counterproductive

250K Can 202K US 169K Euro every city and torn can have this. Rain sun no matter only winter you can't use it. Out door gyms along walking trails and paths. This is my town and it's the largest Out door gym trail in Canada.

Only if ya got a 56inch waist

Just keep out the fridge

Obesity is caused predominantly by lifestyle choices, That’s not to say we shouldn’t offer help.

While this certainly is a contributing factor there aint an obstacle in the world that can't be overcome regular daily exercise almost certainly will provide some benefit even if that not fat loss but overall cardiovascular health

Western society has become sedentary, depending on eating out constantly + unhealthy snacks. We indulge too much & mentally reject self-discipline. TV blasts us w Ads of fast-food junk instead of emphasizing home-cooking. We create dramas at gatherings.

'it's my glands' What it is dear, is one hole working faster than the other.

She gains weight because she eats more than she burns off and that's the simple explanation, it is likely she has to eat a lot less than the average person to lose weight or maintain weight and thats relly tough going feeling hungry every day is not nice

Genes or jeans, yeah I'm sure they are.

When we are born we depend on others to feed us. Our parents and caretakers establish our eating habits. Healthy babies do not grow up to be fat children, fat teens and fat adults without learning to overeat, eat the wrong foods and/or not exercise enough without bad parenting.

Ok, so we'll not blame them for it. Job done, move on .....

Look up David Goggins StayHard

Human beings are the only animal that goes on a diet and doesn’t have a diet. We eat too much crap, carbs(sugar), processed foods, take aways and fast food.

The only reason I struggle to lose weight is because I like to eat and have the motivational range of a protozoan's waist..... Which is tiny - unlike mine. But that's my own fault. 🤷🏼

Go up a size then!

Nonsense

People like Sarah are costing the NHS over £6bn a year 🤬 This money could employ doctors and build hospitals, buy equipment etc This culture of victimhood must end, its selfish and unfair. People should be responsible for their actions

Its time for people to stop body shaming look past how people are outside.this culture of always having to look for the perfect body needs to stop !

You are not hard wired to shovel food into your face though.

If you keep putting petrol in your car but don't drive anywhere, it overflows and spills out everywhere.

The calorie guidance is out of date. Folk used to live more active lives but that’s not the case now, and processed food is a major issue. Ive learnt over the years that if I’m not exercising I need about 1200 calories, but if I’m on it I can virtually eat what I want.

Lazy

The vast majority of overweight people eat too much and move too little. Perhaps there is a tiny percentage of people with a genetic issue. Overall pretending obesity is a disease someone suffers from rather than a self-created state of being is disingenuous.

Someone’s looking for a free sleeve

Same bullshit that addiction is a disease, as an addict I just liked the booze and drugs. Fat people like cake and cheese.

So she went to uni and got fat 😂

Excuses, excuses, excuses 🙄

As someone who has a very lucky metabolism and a job that burns calories for fun I can slightly sympathise. Ultimately if you know the odds are stacked against you surely you make radical lifestyle changes?

It’s a complex interaction between genetics and lifestyle and ruthless marketing of obesogenic foods

Trigger warning

What a pathetic excuse! Put in the same amount of calories as you burn and you won’t put on a gram of weight. It should read ‘my genes mean I should exercise more than I do’….

All she hast to do is stop eating and I guarantee you she will lose the weight

Looking at old films of forties and fifties, there were hardly any fat people because they ate healthier and did more activity. Genetics have not changed, our behaviour has. Making excuses will only make the problem worse, we need willpower not sympathy.

Those who indulge, bulge.

Love on the lips adds to those hips.. fairly simple

If you burn off more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. That is a fact. Genetics may play a small role in the rate, but fat people are fat coz they eat too much for the amount they move.

I'm wondering, if a person doesn't eat, will he still get fat?

One person with a rare genetic feature.

Lose weight, protect the NHS!!!!

eat less fattening foods ... less to store ... simple ... genetics do not apply ... use more energy

It's simple enough, less calories in than you burn. But it varies greatly what people burn. Some can loose weight on 1500 calories a day and others need to go down to 800 calories a day to see ANY loss. It becomes difficult to get the nutrition you need then.

Do more, eat less

It's true

Go on a low carb diet - life changing. Also …. Exercise exercise, exercise… it’s really not that hard 🤷‍♀️

Unless its a medical condition then there is no need to be obese. She needs to stop eating sugary and processed foods, get a gym membership and get herself on the treadmill. Its individuals like her who eventually cost the tax payer thousands because of her lazy lifestyle

Obesity is probably the number 1 reason why things like Covid19 hit as hard as they do, I haven’t read this full article but all I’ll say is, 18 months into a global health crisis, if people aren’t making the steps to bullet proof their body and change their life then no sympathy

She eats too much.

The odd Big Mac and the midnight snack barely has anything to do with.

Baloney... I was 247lbs I changed my diet and just excercised, walked. I am now 189. It took 2 years. Hmm less calories and more movement = losing weight. Wow shocker.

Yup, every time I see a fat person walking down the street while munching from a nosebag of salty or sweet snack food, I repeat to myself the line: 'it's my metabolism'.

Fat gets a bad rap in so many ways. From an evolutionary/survival perspective, the ability of the body to conserve as much consumed energy as possible in the most efficient, concentrated, portable and non-perishable way is actually pretty darn amazing.

Basically shes a butter dish

I was 253 Lbs., I do absolutely no exercise nor any walking. However, I reduced bread and rice, almost 90% and replaced them both with cucumbers, and have lost thirty five pounds in three months.

You are not hard wired to hold fat. With a little starvation and exercise you would lose that fat! Hard wire is just an excuse for eating to much.

Okay…….

Unless Sarah's case is so marginal as to be irrelevant and the vast majority of obese people just eat too much, it's shocking how genes have changed in the past couple of generations

I hope she was warned about the horrible comments she'll get from people who don't understand

I think it would be useful for your article to cite all the peer reviewed studies that back up any claims?

Plenty of effective weight loss medications, amphetamines work for example.

I cannot put on weight and hate Brassica veg with a passion, probably both genetic in some way.

Excellent article

in short, its enviornental.
