According to East Sussex Fire and Rescue, crews were called to the incident just after 12.20pm, along with search and rescue teams.
A team of police dogs was also called to help emergency services assess the strength of the structure.A fire service spokesman said:"Residents are being asked to avoid the area, as there are expected to be a high number of emergency appliances involved in this multi-agency search and rescue operation.
"Firefighters are working alongside other emergency services to check the area to ensure that no one needs rescuing."A statement from owners, The Sussex Archaeological Society, said the area of the castle that collapsed was"privately owned" and away from the main structure.
"This part of the wall is a separate piece away from main castle structure and is precautionary measure due to the recent incident and adverse weather conditions. "The parts of the castle owned and cared for by The Sussex Archaeological Society are annually inspected by a third party expert and regularly by staff to ensure the safety of our visitors, staff and members of the public."
