Former US President, BarackObama, has spoken out about Floyd’s senseless killing, and shared his thoughts on the importance of “peaceful, sustained and effective action”.

Anti-racism protestors in the US, the UK and elsewhere have taken to the streets in their millions in the wake of George Floyd’s killing on 25 May. In footage captured by a bystander, white policeman Derek Chauvin can be seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. An autopsy has since revealed that he died as a result of asphyxiation caused by pressure on his neck.

Over a carousel of eight posts, Obama emphasised the “legitimate” frustration fuelling the protests, but highlighted the lessons to be taken from similar efforts in the past. He acknowledged that ongoing racial injustice had understandably led some to believe that voting and engaging in politics is a waste of time, but argued: “If we are to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics. We have to do both.

Obama first publicly addressed Mr Floyd’s death on 27 May, sharing a viral video of 12-year-old gospel singer Keedron Bryant’s powerful song about the realities of being a young black man in America. In the caption, he outlined excerpts from conversations he’d had with friends about the events in Minnesota, and condemned the shameful “normalisation” of racism in the US. “If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better,⁣” he wrote.
