“It was really challenging to get the gloves through the sewing machine because they’re quite thick and rubbery,” explains McLaughlin, who is obsessive about interesting details, such as the pocket she fashioned to house a spare pair of gloves to keep the wearer’s hands warm – or defend in goal, of course. The entire process took over 30 hours, some 26 gloves and a lot of “trial and error”.
McLaughlin not only has the patience of a saint, she has become one of the sustainability field’s pioneering voices, paving the way for celebrated creativity in a field that was once dampened by hemp-y connotations.
McLaughlin describes her apartment-studio as a “sorting office”, in which she is the postmaster sifting through the industry’s waste. “You have to go into an idea very determined to make it work,” notes Nicole, adding that she has sat on ideas for a year or so until she has figured out the right way to execute them well.
