In a statement, NASA said it was deeply saddened by the loss.
Johnson was portrayed by Taraji P Henson in the 2016 movie Hidden Figures, a true story about trailblazing African-American women working for NASA in a racially-segregated computing unit in Hampton, Virginia. Johnson was one of the 'computers' who solved equations by hand during the early years of the space race.She focused on aeroplanes and other research before working on Project Mercury, the nation's first human space programme.
The next year, she manually verified the calculations that plotted John Glenn's orbits around the planet, with the computer-sceptical astronaut insisting she"check the numbers" before the launch.
Didn’t even know about this lady until I watched the movie Hidden Figures. Bought a copy on iTunes so I wouldn’t forget her & her trail blazing black female colleagues that put Man into space & on the moon. I watched the moon landing & didn’t know until the movie came out! Doh!
