Joanna Lumley: Actor calls for 'wartime' rationing to help ease climate crisisJoanna Lumley has called for a return to a form of "wartime rationing" to help reduce consumption in the face of climate change.
The actor told BBC Breakfast that the climate crisis is a "different form of wartime" and that a "voucher system" which encompasses goods and services such as air miles and food could help people cut down. Ms Lumley acknowledged that viewers may see her as a "rich, old, fat woman preaching" but said that she intends to set an example that others could follow.

Ridiculous extreme. Let's just stop animal abuse--factory farming & shut down all the meat burger shops. Stop rockets, missile testing, target factories and other big energy users. Do more to set up plant food alternatives. Alot of the population is already in poverty.

The vast majority of the world are already 'rationing'. It's the wealthier elements that consumer beyond the planets means and contribute the lions share of emissions. To badly paraphrase Boris Johnson, we just need to eattherich
1%! That is the contribution of the UK in carbon emissions. There is an unhealthy obsession by people to send the UK back to the Stone Age and it will have no impact on climate, it will just impose misery and poverty on the people. Look to China, India, USA to ease the crisis.

Totally agree with you, and shall try to be more austere and responsible. Getting better day by day but can still up the act. Change starts at home......or as I say, personal responsibility goes a long way.

It would certainly emphasise the state the country is in and help people not to spend beyond their means. If prices escalate and our finances reduce, this is what follows! Also we should limit our travelling and use of our vehicles when fuel prices have inflated.

It’s ok for her who has the money to change her car to electric but for those who are not in a position to to do so but still need a car for health work or even to enable them to care for family they would be in trouble with these type of schemes
start by taxing ALL the rich & elite,incl no more tax breaks for any wealthy individual(incl Queen)or corporation,re nationalise water,power & transport companies,ban fossil fuels,govt pay for all homes to be insulated,install solar panels,regulate waste & recycling disposal,
It's a noble sentiment, but somewhat wrong-headed. It was Shell and others who publicised the idea of personal responsibility; that should tell you something.
It looks like we are going that way already, higher prices on fuel and energy and extra taxes plus NI up… my food basket will have under ten items specially selected to what I can afford…
most ppl in the real world particularly the elderly and families are already rationing not cos of climate but cos they cannot afford to live properly
Meaning Britain? Britain is not a big world polluter, it would achieve virtually nothing, World climate is in the hands of the big world polluters ! Might however be a good idea that the U.K. govt. stop the poisoning of ‘our’ water ways and surrounding sea water ?
