Italians decide on Sunday whether to choose their most right-wing government since World War Two, in an election being followed closely across Europe.
Polls open across Italy at 07:00 and close at 23:00, when exit polls will give an idea of who has won. "Meloni speaks to the guts of the people," says Gianluca Atlante, a journalist with local newspaper Latina Oggi. Behind him towers the imposing, built in the shape of a letter M for Mussolini. These days it is the local headquarters for the finance ministry's law enforcement agency.
Giorgia Meloni has formed an alliance with Silvio Berlusconi of Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini's League From right to left, the politicians agree Italy's school system is in a state of decay but schoolteachers such as Elisa are sceptical this election will change that.Elisa with husband PietroItalians are electing two houses of parliament - the Chamber and the Senate - and under new rules their size has been cut by a third, so the Chamber has 400 seats and the Senate 200.
Even if Brothers of Italy does top the vote, and Giorgia Meloni's allies hand her an overall majority, it is not their decision who becomes prime minister. That decision will go to President Sergio Mattarella, who plays an important role in Italy's constitution.
I’ve seen some horror videos on line only made possible through immigration..I don’t know how they have put up with it
It doesn't matter. They will have another election next month.
Nationalism never strengthens diversity in a country, instead hindering economic growth. EuropeanUnion italyelection
Meloni 🤮🤮🤮
So being right-wing and not wanting your country invaded by illegal-immigrant chancers looking to screw you for everything you've got makes you 'far right'? The dictionary according to the BBC 📚
Luvly jubbly 👍
I hope the Meloni won't win.
All the far right gammons are triggered 😂🤣😂🤣🤣
Like if she is going to do anything good 🤣🤣🤣 70 years of governments ripping off Italians of all kinds and far whatever, the new generations are leaving, no jobs, no money, no ideas, no nothing. Until there is a proper reform on these elections bs it will be the same trash
She looks like a Benito to me
This is where we're all heading. We've had decades of poor policy around the levels of immigration and also how to successfully integrate immigrants who do arrive here. Italy is at the coal face and sooner or later people will snap. Expect more of the same.
EU nothing but a trade bully, shown by threats made recently having the “tools” to deal with Italy & Poland… countries fed up being treated like this… all should leave & then the EU Germans will be powerless ✊🏻
Great news for them
Say what you will, at least their population gets a choice. We didn’t.
Media love to throw around the term far right without having a clue what it actually means.
MahsaAmini
If they do vote her in I'm guessing, like Sweden, it will disappear from the news.
Why are they always termed far right? I think you will find the voters are just normal, everyday folk who are sick to death of illegal immigration and woke left wing ideology. Nothing FAR about any of them, just concerned for their country and probably patriotic.
Far right meaning right of centre and euro sceptic.
Over here, the far-right has already seized power
Anyone with a criminal like Berlusconi can be considered far-right.
When even the BBC is referring to a prospective national leader as far-right, it's time to get very worried.
Far right ? Really ? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Great anything make BBC mad suit me and good luck Italy 🇮🇹 best thing you done
Meloni is the face of fascism in Italy. She will be a disaster.
Iranians are sacrificing their children for the safety of the whole world. We will take down the most dangerous terrorist organization on Earth so we can live in a peaceful world. All citizens of the world join in to change the course of history together. IranProtests2022
Italy has been hamstrung by 'Proportional Representation' for many years. In simple terms every political decision has to be horse traded with a multitude of self serving minor parties, so almost nothing gets done, and corruption is rife. Still want PR?
In the eyes of the BBC, which policies make Meloni 'far right'? Apart from being critical of the EU obviously.
I wonder who the 'Ndranghetta or Camorra support ? The Italian Mafia is so engrained in that country's society!
A “Far Right” label from the BBC? 🤔 Maybe it’s worth listening to what she’s really saying …
Please try to write an article without using the words far right...or pick up a history book to see what that actually means
Based.
I fear Italy would come to regret it.
How is “god, fatherland, and family” considered fascist? That’s just common sense 😂😂
Help us in bringing down the mullahs regime and you would be helping ukrain at the same time too. Cause the Islamic republic is selling guns to Russia which are being used against poor Ukrainians. Support us and let's bring down all the dictators. For Iran And Ukrain MahsaAmini
People forget their own history don’t they
‘Far right’ 😂😂😂
Italy is such a ridiculous country that never quite gets it's shit together, now, fascism again, great, just great
