Alum Rock is an inner city suburb of Birmingham. It is deprived and ethnically diverse, with a large Pakistani community.
Local MP Liam Byrne spoke about the problem in the House of Commons this week. It is, he told MPs, "a story of two nations - rich and poor". He believes the vaccination programme needs to be taken out into local communities more, instead of relying on mass vaccination centres and large community hubs.
Councils like Birmingham are using it to work with community leaders, training them to speak informatively and confidently about the benefit of vaccination. Some areas are setting up pop-up clinics in neighbourhoods where uptake is low. They have been run in mosques, churches and community halls. And that is likely to continue. Infection rates are still circulating at higher levels in the poorest neighbourhoods. React, one of the government's surveillance programmes, showed that when the second wave peaked in January, infection rates were 50% higher in the most deprived areas than in the least deprived. Ethnic minority groups were twice as likely to be infected than their white peers.
What do they mean becoming? It already disproportionally has killed more poorer people
A disease of the stupid from how some people are speaking about the vaccine and lockdown rules...
UK is overpopulated by 20 million due primarily to immigration.
Uh oh. We need more vaccines so bad!
Is covid so materialistic it cares?
Vaccination centres are open 7 days a week, you can have it at your GP or local pharmacy too so no need to take time off work unless you work 7 days a week every week
It doesn’t need to be now with the vaccine. It’s free and eligibility is not dependent on class or wealth.
So at the beginning it was a disease that didn't discriminate, anyone can catch it, to only the poor will catch it
Everyone’s a victim *shakes head*
It already is the disease of the poor like most diseases.
What you mean like all the other diseases because of poor nutrition and economic factors.... maybe they should try working from home... or buying a boat? Sail the med for a bit?
Yes much like sypahlis is a disease if the upper class
Let's hope not eh, let's give a thought to those little covid cells having to be exposed to those horrible poor people. No wonder it's killing them all, it must be furious... Or did I read that headline wrong?
Don't think it picks by money in the pocket. Just less likely to follow rule may be a cause. Plus its a money spinner to be a charity case. In a pamper system we teach this is worth their while to be down trodden. Lok at dingy folk running away from France; first thing they say.
Why should it be. Everyone can have a vaccine. This is another negative inflammatory story from.the BBC
No
Has the penny just dropped at the BBC? Same for so many diseases and resultant fatalities
Covid hits everyone. Not just the poor. Ridiculous headline.
Pretty sure “covid” does not care
It is definitely about to become a disease of the rural poor. Here, in rural Northumberland, people are expected to travel to Newcastle for both vaccines. This means taking an entire morning or afternoon off work to get there and back and find the money for travel. Few local jabs
DefundTheBBC. Give it a rest. Pathetic headline.
I think your headline is an insult and a smack in the mouth for the families who aren’t “poor” of ANY of the covid victims! More Woke whining! Seeing as PRIVATE HOSPITALS DON’T accept covid patients, so, ARE YOU SAYING THAT OUR NHS NURSES DON’T LOOK AFTER POOR PEOPLE?
Lower vaccine uptake implies its more a disease of the stupid.
More scare mongering by the bbc. It’s a choice thing not rich v poor thing.
Isn't everything?
It’s free 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Poor no. Uneducated or selfish yes.
Rubbish
Doesn't cost much to put on a mask. Going for a walk is free, and there is no charge for social distancing. It comes down to the choices you make.
Becoming? It already has.
I don’t know, why don’t you ask Covid?
No!
Today's most ironic use of 'at risk'
Just because someone is “poor” it does not exclude them from being a responsible member of society. It does not take much to have clean homes, kids and tidy gardens, and be respectful to neighbours and society at large. Sadly, the majority are not.
Long Covid = new bad back. Watch those claims skyrocket
everything effects the poor u can’t get ur teeth checked next year I’ll need a root canal. Everything comes back on the hard workers at the bottom when will they realise
It's probably due to misinformation and not enough guidance on those who do not want to come forward to get it. It's not a money issue or 'rich vs poor' debate. Headlines and articles causing divide is absolutely past what should be accepted.
It already is!!!!!
What? Already is.
Clever virus. Only picking on the poor? Maybe because of the high rate of people who were infected they don't think they have to get the vaccine. They already had Covid.
Nope, just the stupid..the people stupid enough to believe all the antivax rubbish and refuse to have the vaccination. it’s obviously their choice, but that choice comes with consequences...No foreign travel, no eating in restaurants or going to pub oh and always wear a mask
Vaccines available for all 👍😉
And yet the article starts by saying people won't come forward for the vaccination. Not sure money is the reason for not coming forward.
“The people who are most at risk from the virus are the ones, it seems, who are least likely to come forward for vaccination”. It is therefore about choice, not wealth. The poor can protect themselves as well as the better off people down the road. They simply choose not to!
OMG journalism hits another new low
JUST STOP IT. Media r terrified we will eventually get back to life (who will they brainwash if we all at school or work?). STOP the hyperthetical situations, stop trying to cause division. Our media have been 'the enemy within' for past year - desperate to scare us & on it goes.
The report is confused alludes to that. To be able to draw any conclusions over if it is poverty or ethnicity the study needs to remove one of those 2 factors by comparing matching areas in the one to remove. Matching deprivation then you can look at ethnicity and vice versus
what r u talking about? It is!
Covid has made many people poor, due to losing their business or having to spend their savings. All while having to watch the big companies flourish without hardly any restrictions.
Well the last paragraph says it all. Except the fact that those communities are the ones that have been persecuted by the rich and hated by the white for decades. Why should they trust anything that comes from the Government.
It’s ok BBC your ‘stars’ will likely be immune on their massive salaries.
Wouldn’t be a news article if the BBC didn’t make it about dividing people
Seems like it’s more a disease of the unvaccinated
Is the BBC a bigger risk than the virus, they don't discriminate between rich or poor although they are inclined to support the BAME community more than the white privileged community
and the irresponsible and selfish.
Alum Rock has its share of Mercs & BMW! It's not a rich vs poor issue, it's as an ethnic group they choose not to have it, much like they don't take up the offer of a flu jab every year. My family live in Sutton Coldfield, they are by no means rich! Fact checked and I call BS!
Not sure, but it has highlighted how they have been ignored for years. I just hope they will not be used as a political football once again.
the people who have money and sense wear masks... the council people all wear free lanyards like it's an invinsibility shield. I have sensory processing issues I built up wear time but it still gets too much. I go out side or stay home. is it another reason 4 deaths of disabled?
No 'at risk' about it. Covid - and all diseases - are systemically diseases 'of the poor'. What is shocking is that the BBC and other journalists seem to have only just discovered this fact.
Just waiting for the old racist card to be played!!!!!
What a load of crap, the majority of so called poor stay at home through choice, have kid's and expect everyone else to pay for them, they are the only people to benefit through this covid £20pw pay rise, for what? My wife was made redundant they expect her to live on £74 pw
Poor Covid 19 being at risk.
Is Covid 'at risk'. How can a virus be at risk?
No its not....everyone is offered the vaccine for free.....Its a persons choice if they want that vaccine...no coercion, no blackmail....choice.. It's the stupid conspiracy theories etc. That is stopping people from having the vaccine TakeTheVaccine
Hello everyone, It's not all about you watching football on TV, have you ever had a thought in your mind that you can make money through football betting, search and join ' LADSBROKE ' on TELEGRAM his football tips are amazing
Recently my friend's baby was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia & needs a stem cell transplant. Jason & his wife are first-time parents caring for a sick baby & could use some help. If you are in a place to donate or share, it would be appreciated.
Couple of months ago I came across a recommendation about Michael_homas9 wealth how he helped investors to earn lots of money with their investments. and I decided to give a trial with the little I have. Now my little has turned into something great which was not my expectation
The rich also live in crowded areas. Monaco is one such place. There is a high incidence of COVID 19 there. The rules on what you can and can’t do there are not as strict as neighboring France.
Poor financially? Or Mentally?
Are those dying in America Poor?
Has it not been? The poor bear the brunt of fckng everything.
It's really a health issue... Not a poverty issue... As Fatboy Boris Johnson nearly died after he was deliberately infected with Covid-19 along with Matt Hancock, Dominic Cummings and Mark Sedwill.
If they ignore the rules and refuse vaccines, yes.
If not the BBC/sky will make it a disease of the poor. 🤨
?
Oh and while I’m at it ,the planet will probably have a war soon when the vaccines stop selling, the elite need to sell something and if vaccines stop the weapons will start .😔
Then 'the poor' - or Pakistani immigrants - should have the vaccine that's being offered. They can't be using religion as an excuse - Islamic leaders have backed the vac - so this can only be sheer ignorance.
poor countries maybe.
Poor can’t work from home or stay home
Er... who is writing copy for the Beeb? 'Is Covid at risk...'? What? Come on BBC. The English speaking world looks up to you as the gold standard.
The virus will continue to mutation - the vulnerable will get it
Is it means tested then?
Vaccine is free for everyone. No excuse for not having it.
At risk?! It has been the entire time! People forced back into physical workplaces as ‘essential workers’ are disproportionately in low paid jobs like shops, supermarkets, call centres and the like, while professionals have worked from home this whole time
Are ụ talking about the main covid-19 or the ugly situations that it created which bedevils the poor?
It already is!
Everyone is being vaccinated in the UK regardless of income for free.
So many bitcon traders on Twitter are trickster markdonaldAmeli thank you for opening my eyes to their ways now I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to help others
Becoming? You mean it isn’t already.
Always was.
