I’ve always been a diligent worker. Having had a part-time in a fish and chip shop throughout my A-levels, I know what hard work means. When I received my offer to study at Cambridge University I was congratulated by my colleagues for finally “making it”. In the warm heat of June, a few days before my last exam, I thought this would be the last time I would smell the fish in batter as it hit the sizzling oil.
Omg .. there are rich people there? 😱 Omg .. they know about things you don't? 😱 Go to your library, or use google, to find out about the things you've missed learning. And try asking people to explain things - see how much they really know .. and how much is bullshitting
Maybe the fellow in Matchpoint had the right idea to ingratiate himself into the upperclass. Read a lot of high brow literature and then be able to discuss critical analysis.
Get a library card - there’s a great equalizer. There you can find books on all sorts - literary references, etiquette, how to swot up on opera, classical music, Latin &Greek. This will be much more helpful than moaning. The fact that you don’t understand your privilege is sad.
This is very sad to read. The “oiling” she refers to is not something to admire but an indictment of what is wrong with some of the privileged classes! And yes Boris Johnson springs to mind! She should be proud of her position, she got there on merit alone!
At my uni (Edinburgh '84) I learned there will ALWAYS be richer people. Just have to swallow that. Even with my grant they were off skiing. I worked in a fishmongers ('and were grateful!'). I worried more that the base grant was not enough to feed me. Buy books?! Hah!
how relevant is not having money to party for someone who's truly committed to university? maybe that's why Cambridge became a shithole full of posh kids and oppressed people who'll make anything to feel accepted
Completely fatalistic article. If the author decides to start reading a little bit, maybe her academic background would improve.
'I’ve always been a diligent worker. Having had a part-time in a fish and chip shop throughout my A-levels, I know what hard work means.' Is it just me or is the word job missing?
What is she studying?
This is a very sad, rather fatalistic article. I have to say that I don't think I would have got any of the literary allusions that she refers to, though that is not really the point. But what you do with your Cantab. degree and how far it gets you is *not* just up to others.
Some people have more money than you. Some people have less. Diddums. Welcome to life.
This applies at the USA's Ivy League legacy-squats, too.
