'I nearly died after my contraceptive pill caused a blood clot to form in my brain'

WHEN Lexie Nash was sent home from school with a headache and neck pain - the last thing on her mind was that it could be a stroke caused by her contraceptive pill.

But further tests and a CT scan confirmed that the GCSE student had actually had a rare form of stroke, called Cerebral Venous Sinus Thromeosis. This then leads to a build-up of fluid around the brain, which was causing Lexie's agonising headaches and affecting her sight. “When we were told to "be prepared" at the prospect of losing her I was scared and couldn't hold it together, it was a horrific experience."THERE are two types of stroke - ischaemic and haemorrhagic - both stop oxygenated blood reaching the brain.Meanwhile, a haemorrhagic stroke is bleed on the brain, which causes damage. The condition causes blood clots in the veins, which then draw blood from the brain to the heart.

"My mum and dad rushed me to the hospital again and I held it together until I noticed my dad crying and then I knew it must be bad. Lexie was unable to talk for four days, only being able to communicate with her parents by signalling her thumbs up or down. And while the procedure was successful on the third time, weeks later she needed four more lumbar punctures to tackle her rising pressure.IF someone is suffering a stroke, speed is of the essence.
