A borough's £20million bid for cash from the government’s Levelling Up Fund to revitalise its main town centre for the 21st Century has been submitted.
The council has also submitted its application for another £2.9m from the government UK Shared Prosperity Fund. If the bids are successful the money would finance major improvements in Accrington town centre by March 2025.The Market Hall would be transformed into a food and drink destination for local people and visitors from across the county. The Market Chambers building, opposite it would be bought and refurbished to become a cultural and heritage venue.
“We created a Town Centre Investment Plan for Accrington and three of the interventions were ideal for this bid. If we are successful this will be a springboard for a complete transformation of Hyndburn, regeneration of our main town centre and this will in-turn help all other townships across the borough.
Cllr Munsif Dad, leader of Hyndburn Council’s Labour opposition group, said: “I am pleased the bid has gone in. I hope the government recognises this investment is much-needed. The fear is that the Levelling Up fund will be reduced and Hyndburn will not get the money it deserves.”
