Plastic bags might not be as bad as you think... compared to some of the alternatives 🛍️🌎

How plastic bags were supposed to help save the planet

The plastic carrier bag has become something of a symbol for the problems caused by plastic pollution. But according to the family of the man who created it, Sten Gustaf Thulin, his design was supposed to help the planet and he'd be shocked and upset to see what it's become.BBC Environment Reporter Laura Foster explains what was supposed to happen and why paper and cotton bags can actually be worse for the environment than plastic ones that are recycled.

The problem in the Uk or at least where I work is people are still lazy and forgetful they still buy plastic bags 10p a time use them once and then just throw them despite them being a bag for life where we replace free of charge.

The idea cotton is sustainable has long been debunked, same for Bamboo fibres.Having said this the idea that the majority of people reuse plastic bags is nonsense. So your much more likely to reuse cotton or paper bags, so the argument really doesn't hold up. Suspect and Agenda

mel24372709 Make reusables out of hemp then! It's not rocket science.

I think the point was they weren't getting recycled. If you want a really environmentally friendly bag, maybe we should be looking at nettles as the material to make them with.

Reduced consumption and reuse are important messages. Please don't dilute them by validating plastic use. Consumer behaviour is finally shifting and it is misguided articles like these that take us backwards.

So shall we continue depending on Fossil fuels? Recycle... Nah, we just ship them off to where we cannot see them anymore and then act surprised when they show up inside whales!

Once created plastic is never gone. when it does breakdown it becomes micro plastic particles in water and soil. It is then absorbed or ingested by the entire food chain. Being toxic it likely causes cancer and other inflammatory responses. Paper or cotton - biodegradable. Think!

Refreshing insight amidst all the noise on Ban Plastic dontban

Is that not what a cotton bag is for? Maybe this is getting a little OTT

The inventor had the intention for the plastic bag to be reused. However, people didn’t reuse them. Plus it takes oil to make them, which we’re suppose to be moving away from. Once that happens, we’ll be using more paper and cotton bags. Recycle them, plant more trees, all done.

This thick plastic bag fad is a crock I’ve said it thousands of times you just get turtle choking on a better class of plastic!!

At last a true bit of logical thinking, unfortunately, it doesn't happen enough and not just with plastic bags

BBCWorld Also - compared to death, cancer is healthy.

Now paper bags - Where do you want that people should dispense their accumulation ... ?

BBCWorld Even motor cars were invented and became popular because horse carts made the pathway dirty and dusty. So, now we go back to horse carts ?

Looks like the plastic lobby have been round to see the BBC

The tree issue isn’t really relevant as replacement trees are planted. But the impact from water use and how the energy is produced etc is very relevant. The main issue is the need to switch to more environmentally-friendly methods/energy production - we have the technology.

BBCWorld Grow hemp. Makes paper, clothes, rope, building materials and many other things. Fast-growing and renewable like cotton.

BBCWorld Most plastic bags fall apart after one or two uses, and plastic is rarely recycled. Plastic is not biodegradable. Its use perpetuates the oil and gas industry. This clip ignores microplastics and the impact of vast amount of plastic in the oceans.

It’d be easier to reuse the plastic ones (thus stopping them being single-use, being thrown away and cluttering the planet) if they were still made to a decent standard. Over the years they’ve got thinner and weaker and you’re lucky if you can use them even once before they break

Bit long winded but using cotton bags for years works well.

BBCWorld Single use bags are wasteful and harmful to environment, no matter what form. How many people reuses plastic bags multiple times? Recycling facilities in many area are having difficulty processing any type of plastics.

So much muddled thinking. Paper is made from a renewable source, can be recycled, and at end of life is biodegradable.

BBCWorld I've had my canvas bags for years! I wash them when they get dirty. They will last a hell of a lot longer than a plastic bag.

Misleading tones

But NO ONE ever talks about recycling old clothes or paper items into bags. Everyone always talks about “new” cotton or paper but never mention how we can ♻️ old items into bags.

What are you doing

Always argued replacing plastic bags with paper was not environmentally sound. Used plastic shopping bags, for many people, were already reused as bin bags. Today we have the impact of paper & cotton bags and buy single use plastic bin bags ....

We need to be better at collection & recycling. We used to send our 'recycling' aborad, as it was cheaper, but rather than recycling it, much was dumped at sea. That's why it was cheaper. Reclycing policy backfired. Recycle it locally and do it properly for once.

BBCWorld We have exactly the same issue with electric cars, but people look just at the end of the process. Electric power doesn't come out of nothing.

Well no matter not plastic does not belong in the see or in nature.

BBCWorld Please put the camera closer to her face.

But in the corporate world, where making everything ever smaller and crappier is the imperative, the plastic bags we get can't hold more than three apples and don't last even one use. People throw them away because they aren't reusable (except maybe to pick up dog poop).

BBCWorld Guess I'll just die?

BBC fucking us over yet again. Who is surprised

This is misleading. Paper molecules aren't entering the food chain in dangerous numbers; biodegradable cotton and paper aren't killing wildlife. Plastic is.

Where are the eco boring people now?

BBCWorld not be as bad as you think... compared to Hitler.

BBCWorld Counter campaign by the plastic manufacturing lobby against the 'ban plastic' movement.

This is heavily misleading, cotton and paper bags do indeed require more energy to produce, but this energy can come from carbon neutral shortages, and decompose. Plastic bags do not, and pollute long after they're made...

Don’t use plastic bags. Period.

Why the hell would you publish this in portrait
