'Our numbers have surpassed anything we’d see in the worst winters'

An unprecedented number of people coming into A&E has led to nine hour waits at a struggling hospital.

This happened most recently on Monday last week, when 518 people received emergency care – compared to 875 across all types.But the main driver behind these dalsys is generally sick people coming in for treatment.Clinical director of medicine at Newcastle Hospitals Trust, Dr Chris Gibbons, told the BBC: ‘Our numbers have surpassed anything we’d see in the worst winters.‘Most days we’re starting with patients in the emergency department waiting for beds.
