Some may want an escape from the office grind, but remote working could eat into downtime and increase inequality, writes John Harris

It is not exactly a revelation that the stresses and pressures of homeworking fall disproportionately on women, who are often faced with an impossible pile-up of childcare, home schooling and the demand to be constantly on call. Again, from the US is instructive here, showing that men are far more likely than women to experience homeworking as a boost to their productivity and career prospects .

My partner's office regularly polls everyone on working from home and only 10% are keen to commute to the office again. The work life balance is better for many and better for the environment if less people commute.

Nope....I have more of a life working from home as I am not restricted to the set times of the office and I don’t have to waste precious time everyday with the commute and traffic jams.

I found I worked more intensively at home, getting more done in the time due to fewer interruptions, but then became very tired as well as losing out on the informal discussions which helped us to make progress.

Disagree totally with this. People stayed long hours in offices, culture of bullying and time off sick with stress. So at home there are none of these pressures or the commute which is far better for the environment.

Nothing takes over your life more than a forced commute. Like, may others, I did it into Central London. 2hrs each way door to office, that's 4hrs per day, getting to/from if trains on time. Paid £5k+pa to do this. WFH gives people choices on how to use time. Commuting doesn't.

On the upside I found the core reason I studied law, following a resignation that may lead to a constructive dismissal from my previous employer.

The Conservatives are now the party of England. Changing that will be hard | John HarrisAs class-based loyalties have faded, the Tories have cast themselves adeptly as authentic populists, says Guardian columnist John Harris They're the party of England cos there aren't any real capable opposition. How come we have the exact same issue in the Netherlands: 'Conservatism is often cruel, cold and surreally incompetent. If it affects to be broad-based, such appearances fail to conceal the interests of wealthy white men; and if it has to stoop to conquer, it rarely holds back.' Unionism, which Stalimer's Labour share with the Tories, will condemn Labour in Scotland and Wales.
