The update comes after Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called on the home secretary to"take responsibility".
"At the very least, she should be in parliament on Monday making a statement about this: explaining it, giving the full facts and facing questions from members of parliament. And that's the least we expect from the home secretary."'The scale of this looks to be increasing'150,000 records were lostSome 213,000 offence records were wiped from the Police National Computer, along with 175,000 arrest records and 15,000 person records.
In a later statement, Mr Malthouse said the issue had been identified and corrected"so it cannot happen again". Sources also say that references in the letter to"near misses" where biometric matches have not been triggered in an investigation could be"optimistically written" and the consequences of the data loss could be wide.
Speaking to Sky News, Labour's shadow home secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds said:"You do not make our streets safer by losing such a substantial amount of information about criminal behaviour. This is extraordinarily serious.
Incompetence or covering up nonces?
Sounds like left wing civil servants causing trouble for the government yet again 🤔
Just keeps going up! Priti Patel might need to resign on this one. Boris Johnston's little erection for her will be seen no more!
Highly unlikely. It puts police in a position they’d be if what some campaigners have long wanted had been imposed & records for those not eventually convicted were destroyed. It’s only records of innocent people who have been investigated, a large proportion will come again.
Pritti useless patel at it again.
Nah, they've got a backup somewhere, surely
Excusable, was probably typing with their arse.
In this case the issue at the PNC which has caused the erasure of data which can be recovered is not the fault of the home secretary however she does need to come to the house on Monday, give a statement as to what happened and what steps have been put in place to put it right
What total incompetence.
After being wrongly arrested over 10 years ago I have been trying to get my DNA and fingerprints deleted and have been told previously they couldn't guarantee they were off of police systems - if they have now managed to delete them by accident I will chuckle.
Why are there no journalists asking about back-ups? Is this the tack for the Sunday rounds or is there a security clampdown, as there is over vaccines, making it illegal to ask the question?
Now THAT will have been deliberate!
