We hear you Holly!

They're 'fearful' for the future

Charlotte Grant-West Social Editor The This Morning presenter has opened up about the effect that climate change is having on her kids, admitting they're becoming worried and anxious about what they see on the news. Surprising things you didn't know about Holly Willoughby 'Mummy, is the world going to end?' 'Why are the koala bears hurt?' 'Why is there so much plastic on the beach?' In 2020 it's becoming increasingly common to hear heartbreaking questions like these from your kids. It's no surprise then that Holly Willoughby's children are asking her the same things. The presenter, who is mum to sons Chester (5) and Harry (10) and daughter Belle (8), was chatting to two activists on This Morning when she revealed that her children are increasingly anxious about climate change. Speaking about eco-anxiety in general, activist Pippa Best told Holly and co-host Phillip Schofield: 'It's something that's I've always been concerned about ... we desperately want to do something and we often feel powerless.' ITV's This Morning Holly agreed and spoke about how her three children had been impacted by climate change being in the news so much. She said: 'I've got my three children and they watch Newsround, it's something that's part of school, they watch it. 'They come home and more recently I notice they talk about it a lot. We've always been quite environmental in our home, as much as we can.' Holly continued, saying there has been a change to the way her kids were processing the news. She said: 'They're talking about it in a different way now, the same as what you've seen with the bush fires, all sorts of things. And they do worry about it. 'Their questioning has changed, actually it's become quite fearful and I'm wondering as a parent, how do we deal with that? Because it's not just affecting adults, it is affecting our children, too.' Climate psychologist Dr Patrick Kennedy-Williams admitted that he and others in the field had been contacted over similar worries. He said: 'I'm a parent as well and I'm having to answer really difficult questions about the climate that I may not know the answer to or that I might want to protect my children from.' Talking to Good Housekeeping, Sara Peach who runs Yale Climate Connections Ask Sara, has some tips for parents dealing with tricky questions about the environment. She says: 'It’s so important when you’re talking with kids about climate change to also talk about what they can do about it, so it’s not framed as we’re all going to die. 'If you tell them a lot of people are working on it and kids can be part of the solution, kids will come up with ideas.' Now that sounds like a plan. Are your kids eco-anxious?
