The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) says that Labour's plan would still boost the public coffers by upwards of £1.3bn, even if thousands of pupils leave private schools

Headteachers have warned that additional revenue raised by Labour’s proposed VAT raid on private school fees could be wiped out by pupils transferring from independent to state schools., which the party estimates could raise £1.7bn a year to spend on lifting educational standards across the state sector.

But the leader of a headteachers’ union has suggested that the extra revenue raised may have to go towards expanding state schools to accommodate pupils forced out of the private sector, leaving nothing left to improve standards.: “ASCL represents leaders in the state and independent sectors. “State spending on schools would therefore have to increase, potentially negating the extra revenue gained by taxing independent schools.

“Labour’s policy is therefore marginal at best in terms of making any meaningful difference to school funding and will obviously entail substantial disruption to the children and staff affected in the independent sector.”
