The firm which bought Thomas Cook shops has said up to 878 employees out of 4,500 may lose their jobs due to new coronavirus travel restrictions.
Owners John and Irene Hays said Spanish travel restrictions meant hundreds of thousands of holidays were cancelled. In a joint statement, the Hays said they had"made every possible effort" to protect the jobs of all its staff"including those who were employed when Hays Travel took on the Thomas Cook shops last October."
The firm said its experienced travel sales staff, apprentices and other head office staff were not affected by the cuts."We are devastated that after all of our efforts and the huge investment we've made we now face losing some of our valued employees, through no fault of their own. The Hays staff facing redundancy are a mixture of people who were in the old company and former Thomas Cook staff.
Sadly the incompetent uk goverment have screwed the travel industry with these restriction for the Spanish Islands. Possibly been done as part of brexit politics. Please stop blaming the travel agent.
Is it just me or does she look like one of them bo selecta’ characters 😂😂🤷♂️
You will be hard pressed to find bosses as honest and decent as these people . The job cuts seem to be beyond their control sad
I was impressed that they did a media round to discuss thd bad news in person. Obviously getting some sound PR advice on reputation management and damage limitation.
I first read about COVID19 in November 2019 there were pictures of people walking around parts of Wuhan with hazmat suits on then people were very naive and slow to not take action then and shutdown borders and travel then
Terrible for the 900 staff. Unfortunately despite a great operating turnover of £1bn the profits were small at about £8m. Estimate the cost of keeping the 900 staff at circa £15,000,000 salary alone, not including pensions etc, it’s probably required to keep the company afloat.
Best wishes to everyone HaysTravel Unlike many travel agents, we got a refund for our Easter break as soon as the lockdown started. We'll definitely book with them once this madness settles. John and Irene Hays have acted honourably through this.
They tried at least just gov letting them down
All those poor people losing their businesses - and the terrible situation that they find themselves in making thousands out of work.
On Friday, there were 6 new cases of Covid 19 in the Canary Islands. I may be wrong but the potential is these are all imported cases. Persons in government quarantine. There were more cases reported from punters in a single pub in Stone over 3 days. Quarantine is unnecessary.
Maybe, they see an oppertunity to scale back while money is in the bank. Sad to say bt may be using this as an excuse. This is a company that profits have soared recently and has an annual turnover of £1 billion and they cant weather the storm for a few months, it stinks to me 😏

Very sad news .... the UK travel industry is really going to struggle to get back on its feet-not forgetting airlines, cruise ships, tour operators and all the ancillary services that go with it from overseas too ☹️
They took a brave step after Thomas Cook you have to feel sorry for them
John and Irene are wonderfully caring employers. This is such a difficult time for the travel sector. My best wishes to everyone HaysTravel
Sad. But you should not have been pushing people to go on holiday In the middle of a deadly pandemic
Cant see the problem 3rd most dangerous pl in Europe to get virus ?balaerics one of the lowest ?
How can Hays Travel & British holidaymakers be so heavily dependent on just one holiday destination - mainland Spain & the Spanish islands? More than 190 countries in the world!
Universal basic income - it has to be NOW!
They were just on last monrysay how well they were doing and able to retain all their workers.
