About 1.3 million coca plants are found in a mountainous area that takes three hours to reach on foot, police say.

Guatemala has admitted being a cocaine-producing nation after 1.3 million coca plants and processing laboratories were found in a remote region of the country.

The plantations were discovered in a mountainous area that took three hours to reach on foot, police said. They have been destroyed, along with two labs. More than 340 people were detained and 52 firearms, 57 motorcycles and 38 other vehicles seized. The discovery follows the granting of emergency powers to the military in eastern Guatemala after three soldiers were murdered earlier this month. They had been ambushed by drug traffickers, the government said.

The coca plants were found close to where the soldiers were killed, in remote areas of the municipalities of Livingston and El Estor.Until recently, the crop was almost exclusively cultivated in Colombia, Peru and Bolivia.
