Liz Truss's focus on 'investment zones' is a 'massive risk' for the Conservatives, report warns

Ed Shackle, senior policy manager at Public First, who produced the report said: “There is a massive risk for Liz Truss’s government here. A lot of people we spoke to were first time Tory voters, and many of them said they voted for Boris Johnson, not the Conservatives. Allegiance to the Conservative Party is incredibly weak.

“Unless the Government takes meaningful action and people see demonstrable change to their high streets and areas where they live, then the Conservatives are at risk of losing Stoke, and places like it,” he added. There are suggestions Ms Truss is looking to distance herself from the policy platform of her predecessor, and is trying to conjure up her own phrase for levelling up.

But Public First warned this would provide the Labour party with a significant opportunity to seize the initiative on the policy.that levelling up had “gained traction” among local communities in recent months, which they conceive it as about “reducing things like anti-social behaviour, but also by rebuilding civic pride, developing local opportunities for young people and breathing new life into their high streets”.

He added: “It’s hard to see how the Truss agenda will deliver that local agenda – and as such they have left an open goal for Labour.”
