Scientists have used gene editing technology to create female-only and male-only litters of mice.
The technique, which has been outlined in the academic journal Nature Communications, deactivates a gene involved with embryo development. Dr Peter Ellis of Kent University told BBC News that if the results do translate from the lab to commercial use, they could have a "far reaching" impact on animal welfare.
Dr James Turner, from the Francis Crick Institute in London, has identified 25,000 research papers published in the past five years, around 25,000 papers that required male- or female-only mice. "We support its use to improve animal welfare, such as ensuring that hens only produce female chicks, as this would prevent the killing of millions of unwanted male chicks in the UK each year.""This is especially pertinent when so many of the touted potential 'benefits' are for dealing with animal welfare or environmental problems created by humans ourselves."
The chicken Industry is as cruel as it is cause of human greed. People who bake cakes daily and other foods that use countless eggs - animals suffer for human greed - so humans can have their cake or BUCKETS of KFC. AND THE F****** RATS OUT OF THE LABS & THEIR TINY CAGES !
None of this industry makes sense- killing make chicks just cause they don't lay eggs. Until the whole sick chicken industry is stopped there are no excuses that the male chics can't be sent to free range chicken facilities & follow the meat path. Horrific suffering & food waste
You will never stop suffering in the chicken industry. It's one of the cruelest industries and the only one I have heard of where a baby never even sets eye on its mother. Don't the eggs hatch on conveyer belts like a factory production line ? Shut the whole industry down.
This is great and will hopefully help reduce the millions of chicks accidentally born male and therefore literally minced after one short day alive
