From stubble to scars, we reveal the eight odd reasons why you might worship that unlikely sex god

NOT every man has Brad Pitt’s looks or George Clooney’s silvery charm. Yet sometimes a guy just has something about him.

Just like on Hollywood star Jason Momoa the marks of a facial scar might make a chap seem sexier. Researchers at the University of Liverpool asked 220 people to look at a selection of pictures of men and women. The fact an injury has healed might suggest he has a strong immune system and is so good “dad” material.Men are seen as more attractive when they show they have interests other than their own appearanceHowever good-looking a man is, being smug about his looks is a turn-off. Oxford University researchers analysed ten years of data from dating sites and found men who rate their looks as five or six out of ten get more messages from interested women than fellas who score themselves a perfect ten.

Women were much more attracted to these men. The psychologists who did the study believe men with dogs were viewed as more caring and potentially as more reliable dads.Men who dress in red, like Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix were more likely to be seen as sexually desirable in a study published in the Journal Of Experimental Psychology.

Women then rated the smells. The smells of men who had eaten garlic, below, or garlic capsules were scored as more attractive.

Keir Starmer: UK aid could help fix the world – but not under Boris Johnson's plansGlobal inequality can be thwarted. But UK has to return to playing a key role in shaping the development agenda for the decades to come These words strike me as tossed about lyrics written and sung with little sense of harmony.
