Susie Cleverly was diagnosed with breast cancer while her husband was a minister in the Foreign Office and was receiving treatment as he was made foreign secretary in September.

'I just couldn't get the words out'"I had to ring my private secretary in the Foreign Office saying 'can you cancel meetings because I need to go home', and he said 'is everything okay minister?'"I tried to say Susie might have cancer, I just couldn't get the words out, I couldn't speak - I like to talk, but I just couldn't speak.

"For the next couple of hours everything was done on WhatsApp, and it really hit me, I never felt anything like that before."Susie Cleverly found dimpled skin on her right breast nearly a year ago to the day, which turned out to be breast cancerMrs Cleverly then had about eight mammograms in one day, but they could not see anything until a scan found three lumps in her breast and a node in her arm."I wasn't scared when they told me that," she said.

She has now had a mastectomy but is still having immunotherapy to reduce the risk of recurrence and is on a waiting list for reconstructive surgery. But Mr Cleverly admitted there were a"couple of times" he thought he might lose his wife.

Brave woman Susie Cleverly really insightful interview, seeing the human side of JamesCleverly

'I couldn't speak, and I can talk, but I just couldn't speak.' James Cleverly says he 'just couldn't get the words out', after his wife told him she may have breast cancer. Rigby: 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube

BethRigby PR for a criminal.

BethRigby Good to see the kinder left displaying their empathy in the comments below as usual. Losing a loved one to cancer, or watching them go through it is heartbreaking…regardless of which side of the political spectrum you are on. Makes me sick some of these comments

BethRigby No matter. The Tories have 'armed' private healthcare providers with millions & 'diminished' the NHS. Money flows come 1st: a regular occurrence throughout history, esp after WW1. The working classes (cannon folder) suffered thereafter by cruel policies. What's changed?

BethRigby As much as Beff feared losing her job for breaking lockdown laws....

BethRigby How can you ask for empathy when you really do not care about all those others on waiting lists. Do they not count are the just numbers and quotas.

BethRigby I feel sad for all those patients who have had delayed cancer diagnosis and treatment under this Tory Government tbh

BethRigby How can somebody go through something so heartbreaking and difficult and still be an empathy and humanity lacking Tory?

BethRigby Is it any of hers or our f'in business.

christiancalgie BethRigby No thanks....wouldn't watch Rigby if you paid me!

BethRigby What a fucking godawful question to ask him. Of course they considered that...all the time. What couple going through cancer wouldn't, especially those with children. Be a better journalist, Beth or find a different job.

BethRigby As if they would use the NHS, it will be Bupa private healthcare for them.

BethRigby Amazing how they’ve all decided they need to show some humanity all of a sudden, must be the grim-reaperesque behaviour of the last 12 years that suddenly looks unelectable.

BethRigby I’m against his politics, but this was a tough watch - and a really warming chat. I wish them good health.

BethRigby Did she get treatment via NHS?

BethRigby Erm..err...erm..err.. errr...erm

BethRigby Ridiculous question to ask

BethRigby At least he can be with her, unlike many people that he and his Government stopped from seeing loved ones before passing away.

BethRigby Can understand and feel his anguish tory or not.

BethRigby Heartless batch

His lucky he get all his utility bills paid for then isn’t he, us others with unwell family members still have to find the money to pay For them
