The most senior lawyer in Wales has said the forced installation of prepayment meters could be breaching people’s civil rights as Nicola Sturgeon joined calls for Grant Shapps to take tougher action 🔎 The latest from deankirby_

“This is something I think we can validly take up, of significant concern, with both the justice minister of the UK Government and, I think, also, with the Attorney General, just to examine and consider the approach that the courts are adopting to basically receive spreadsheets of names and rub stamp warrants en bloc,” Mr Antoniw said.

Around 200,000 households in Wales use prepayment meters, according to the Welsh Government. They are in 15 percent of homes although this rises to 45 percent among social housing tenants. Many are on the lowest incomes and are among the most vulnerable people in the country. She told the Senedd: “However, there is now evidence that suppliers aren’t following the basic rules to protect people in vulnerable circumstances.

“I will be writing to the Business and Energy Secretary Grant Shapps on issues surrounding prepayment meters and calling on UK Government for a strengthened intervention with energy providers to stop forced installations.
