Household appliances will become easier to repair thanks to new standards being adopted across the European Union.
Owners are usually unable to repair the machines themselves - or find anyone else to do it at a decent price - so are forced to buy a replacement. Campaigners say individual consumers should also be allowed to buy spares and mend their own machines. But manufacturers said this would raise questions about risk and liability.Instead, manufacturers will have to ensure that key parts of the product can be replaced by independent professionals.
The move could directly save €20bn on energy bills per year in Europe from 2030 onwards - equivalent to 5% of EU electricity consumption.

The campaigners are correct unless consumers can purchase the spare parts it's completely pointless legislation.
This is another example of ‘how it used to be’ keep getting told it was the older generation that fucked the planet. Yet they had milk delivered in reusable containers by an electric vehicle, walked everywhere and reused or repaired where possible. Coal being the issue though
ConsumerRightsAct 2015
Ridiculous- consumers or those paying the piper are not allowed to fix their own goods ☘️☘️☘️☘️
And the prices on all items covered by this rule will do what?
Nothing to do with us.We're leaving.
Isn’t Brexit just wonderful! 😂😂😂
i like this...sodding brexit
As far as my wife are concerned,we've found it's actually cheaper to replace rather than repair, owing to exorbitant call out charges. Not exactly 'Green'is it ? 😠
But we are leaving the EU Brussels broadcasting corporation
not the UK. we'll be out of it soon, the piggy business fraternity can carry on stitching up the people with impunity-treasure island britain the tory paradise for the greedy
All very well but manufacturers will just load the price of parts because they are theives. I tried to buy a washing machine motor from Bosch. They wanted £243. More than I paid for the washing machine.
And so it begins... As I predicted... Pro EU headlines that normal people want to hear to make people change their minds and stay .. although this is a CON, it will be dressed up by msm so that the stupid public will believe it
Not much good for us after 31 October
Anything else happening in the EU? Dutch farmers protesting? French police battering citizens?
Can we not make our own rules when we leave?
Miele sell parts for there machines so well built last over 25 years But if you need an engineer out they charge over £150 call out this forces people to scrap perfectly repairable machines
It could be another way to hit the UK financially
Long overdue and we’ve known for decades that they’re deliberately built NOT to last.
The trouble is it can sometimes cost nearly as much to repair than to replace .
All british brands of domestic appliances are just a name stuck on some Europeean foreign companies engineering and know how. Being in Europe has decimated all our manufacturing leading to weak and dangerous European safety standards for these products and shorter lifespans too.
Very good move to protect people from needless tension& financial loss. All the countries should bring such move.
Great 👍 idea 💡
Why is this news? Won't apply to us?
cara_daria this will be handy when we actually own one. 😂
I wonder if that’ll be extended to tech like mobile phones and computers.
Yes, it's called a warranty mate.
Damn the pesky EU forcing laws that be benefit the people. How dare they
Great! I'm actually not bothering to replace my small kitchen appliances as they break down. I'm now just kitchening the way my grandparents did. Collecting antique kitchenalia is quite fun actually!
When we are free of Europe we can adopt those laws the EU bring in which seem sensible and ignore all those that don't!
