Essential oils for labour: benefits, safety and which to buy:

Essential oils can be a wonderful and natural option for mums-to-be through pregnancy, labour, birth and beyond. We spoke to aromatherapist Emma Nash to find out more about using essential oils for birth.

How can I use essential oils during labour?"My preference is for the mum-to-be to use a rollerball on her pulse points (wrist, behind the ear, on the temples)," explains Emma. "The rollerball is a 2 per cent dilution of pure essential oil in a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil."

Using a few drops of pure essential oil in a diffuser in the labour room is a great way to inhale and exhale the mist which bestows the therapeutic benefits of the oils without having any contact with skin."A good quality massage oil that is specially formulated for labour can be used directly on the skin. A good shoulder and back or foot massage is a good way for a partner to get involved and support their partner and help ease the pain and anxiety she may be experiencing."

The best essential oilsView offerThe most popular essential oil used in aromatherapy. Lavender is a calming and soothing oil. It can be used as a disinfectant but for use in labour I recommend that it is used in a roller ball, diffuser or massage oil. The beautifully floral notes of the English Lavender oil in particular can really help ease anxiety and stress during labour.

View offerFrom the blossom of the orange tree. This super oil is well used in all aspects of wellbeing, skin care, beauty and pregnancy aromatherapy. Neroil is a well-known de-stressing oil and soother. Use a Moroccan or Tunisian oil as these are the best quality. It’s a very expensive oil so expect to pay for a good quality oil but it will be well worth it.

View offerA gentle smelling oil which is used to help with pain relief and muscle relaxation. It can also help with nausea. I would recommend a good Spanish oil or from anywhere in the Mediterranean. Once again Clary Sage is an expensive oil so anything cheap will be adulterated and not as effective. Note that Clary Sage stimulates the uterus so should never be used before 37th week of pregnancy.

Newspaper headlines: MP safety review and terror cops probe deathThe killing of Tory MP Sir David Amess, stabbed at his constituency surgery, leads the front pages. Listened to this awful story all night (from o/s). Why reach for 'T' word? A 'political murder' is at minimum a political murder. If a governmental figure is killed for their actions or beliefs it is 'assassination'. Terrorism is organised violence to instill public fear. You deserve everything that happens. You are the one who decided to welcome Muslims

Thousands of affordable UK homes ‘won’t be built because of safety crisis’Construction firms say diversion of money towards repairs will result in fewer new buildings Well the rag can't complain, it's been ranting on about the safety issues for years. Stand by for yet another spending commitment............ emma_byrnee They aren't 'Repairs' they are remediations of errors which builders shouldn't have made in the first place. And developers shouldn't be able to build - and sell - more property until they have corrected all of the corners they cut on earlier developments. The building companies and individual builders should be footing the bills they all knew what they were doing. Why are social tenants getting it all paid for when they get around a 1/3 off market rate already.

Long Covid: what are you entitled to if you can’t work in the UK?About 1m Britons report symptoms and many are unable to work – but there are benefits and arrangements in place Good luck with that. Eventually they will tire of you 'faking it' and you will told to take antidepressants and change your thought patterns via CBT.
