Dahlia Francis is sitting on a small couch at the foot of her bed, in her shared flat, on a housing estate in south London. She wears her new uniform of pyjama bottoms and a Zoom-ready plain T-shirt. Her room used to be a living room. Now the only communal space is the kitchen, where Francis’s three flatmates occupy a small dining table. They, like almost half of Britain’s workforce, are also working from home.
What do ya mean I love working from home, no horrendous traffic on the commute, lovely view out of the window, no struggle to hear people on the phone, no paying for lunch what’s not to love
Amen. I've been working from home alone since March and am not looking forward to it continuing indefinitely.
Why is it always one or the other? There are other options, like working from a cafe.
I suggest that ceteris Paribas, people with long commutes have a stronger preference for WFH as a norm. For me post-COVID19 a couple of days a week would be ideal for social cohesion and problem-solving or creative sessions. I have a great home office and live 20mins away by car.
Watching the birds in the garden certainly beats having inane conversations about nothing with people I am not interested in by the coffee machine. Also the 2.5 hours a day I get to spend with my children rather than commuting.
Thank you. I’m shocked that you published such a great article without even the slightest whiff of leftist spin. So you can do it! Carry on like this and you might even get me subscribing one day.
Slightly miss being able to see if someone is busy, the canteen, the gym and the cycle there. But overall much happier at home.
Why does it have to be either/or? My employer has been surprised productivity hasn’t gone down (🙄) so now there’s no rush to get back to the office. I know for me and my team it will be important for us to be in the office some days a week but not every day.
I've worked at home one day a week for years. And that was perfect. Every single day for months / years. Nah
Flexibility is great, living at work sucks. However I’m sure employers are actually happy to move costs to employees
It's definitely living at work, rather working from home. Also, if your job requires cross department/team collaboration on project work, very difficult and much slower feedback, definitely stifles problem solving. 2/3 day split either way seems a good split for those that can.
I'm definitely happier working from home. Getting more done and less stressed. Win for me and win for my employer. Going into the office one day a week to do the bits I can't do at home.
Pre-Covid I was already pretty much WFH. But I miss meeting colleagues in an office setting, with the option to socialize after hours. And I hate clients and suppliers thinking we’re on-call 24/7. I hate that Viber ping every 20 seconds. I hate Zoom cons. I hate this new normal.
I'm loving it
It's not working from home any longer, it's living at work. Key difference to my mind.
Thank you for this. So much of the work from home discussion is dominated by those it suits best - in large houses, with company from spouses/families who love them. Too little voice is given to those in other life stages & what a major societal shift this is for them.
Bring it on. I'll happily do this until I retire. Naps whenever, Sudoku, crosswords, Twitter, bit of DIY. It's like being retired but still getting paid a nice sum.
I love the fact that I don't have to commute at rush hours to central London. I enjoy WFH although it is not something new for my company. I believe though that 2 days per week in the office and 3 at home is a good compromise.
I loved working from home. It helps to have hobbies and a nice home environment too.
Love working from home ~ it is going on indefinitely for my organisation and I love it.
It’s just so boring always being in the house. At least if you’re furloughed etc you can do what you want with your days. I’m stuck working in my house 40 odd hours a week, on top of spending a lot more time in than I would have ordinarily, and I’m going demented!
It sucks
