Reflecting on her past career, she says. “I’ve really gone to many auditions where it happens where I’m in a room with all the other girls and I know that I’m ticking the box, and so I really don’t like when people are like, ‘Oh, they were looking for diversity, so they got you.’”
She talks about how things are progressing, but that casting directors still need to do more to offer opportunities to actors of colour to have experience in order to get the best parts. “I want to get a part because I was the best person for the part. I do not want to get a part because they’re looking for ‘this, this or this’ specifically.”
“The easy answer is absolutely,” she answers. “I’ve been told everything in the book, from, ‘Oh, we wanted a person of colour. So, we went with a Black person.’ To be erased in two ways [like that],” she shakes her head and continues. “So, whenever those kinds of things happened to me, I had to turn on this numbness a little bit to be OK. ‘That hurts. I don’t know why. We’ll put that away, but onto the next’ – and that kind of resilience and positivity I’ve learned from my parents.
