The statue of slave trader Edward Colston was secretly replaced overnight with a sculpture of aHis empty spot has been filled with a monument to Jen Reid, who was photographed on the plinth with her fist raised after the 17th century merchant was pulled down by demonstrators last month.The sculpture of Miss Reid was erected just before 5am by a team of 10 people directed by the artist Marc Quinn.The protester told the Guardian she had been secretly working with the artist on the idea for weeks.
Artist Marc Quinn was inspired after seeing protester Jen standing on the plinth following the removal of Colston supports HTML5 video Workers arrived in two lorries and had the sculpture up within 15 minutes using a hydraulic crane truck parked next to the plinth. The plinth has been largely empty in the weeks following the protests apart from a few temporary installations – including a mannequin of paedophile Jimmy Savile.
I liked the new statue. There was something that crossed my mind though: Is raising the right hand fist OK? 🤔 Because it could be misrepresented as connected to fascist/Nazi movements. People avoid that by raising the left hand fist instead.

It's good news but without it being permitted through legal processes, it's only going to cause problems going forward. Difficult to see the right route to take here. I don't envy BristolCouncil
Such good news and what a beautiful statue.
It's an illegal installation that didn't permit the people of Bristol to even have a say. This lawless group did not let democratic process happen with the criminal destruction of Colston and now they the same bullying with the erection of their own choice. This is NOT democracy.
