EasyJet 'using sickness records to decide job cuts', pilots' union claims

EasyJet has been accused of intending to use pilots' sickness records when drawing up plans for over 700 job cuts.

EasyJet is planning 727 pilot redundancies as part of up to 4,500 job cuts and a restructuring that includes closing bases at Stansted, Southend and Newcastle airports.Ahead of the start of formal talks, Balpa said the airline has told pilot representatives it will use sickness as a component in choosing who loses their job.Brian Strutton, Balpa's general secretary, called it outrageous."Flight safety is built on a culture of openness and not fear of repercussions.

But the airline rejected Balpa's claims:"We would never put forward proposals which would compromise safety as we have an industry-leading safety culture, as Balpa acknowledges.

Why shouldn't they? Those would be more 'at risk' people.

It can be included as a criteria for selection along with length of service, performance etc

Unions advise a selection matrix is used which would include absence records. If you don’t have enough volunteers and need to cut costs to save everyone’s jobs you need to pick. Make it as fair as possible.

Why keep people that are constantly off work. We have that problem where I work. It’s always the same people!!

They'll be putting different lengths of straw into top hats next, or doing the old 1,2 miss a few.

Let’s hope they have saved some of there £100K +wages over the years to get them by

Less —- 🍺 🍷 🍹

Most likely how most firms do it

A nothing story as most companies review personnel records at times like these

Is that not against the law?

How is that fair if someone had to be off with on going treatment?

Is this even legal?

For employees who have been with them for longer than a year (or two if hired after 2012), this will be tricky. They can easily file an unfair dismissal case.

Capitalism is a bitch.

This is normal practice for most companies making redundancies, they use a range of criteria and sickness is one of them.

Seems fair enough, I’d rather keep on someone that wasn’t off sick all the time

I thought they had already started cutting jobs I mean if your trying to get hold of someone regarding a refund for your cancelled flight from March, you need a Devine intervention! 🤬

Makes perfect sense to keep hold of the best and most reliable staff. Companies will probably look into a number of factors before deciding who to move forward with.

Companies have been doing this for decades ,nothing to see here

How would one decide? Last in ? Oldest? Highest paid? Time keeping, attendance and sickness would have to be taken into consideration I suppose.

Every company has a few people who are quick to pull the sicknote. PC making it harder nowadays to get rid!

This is just not the time!

Good. I'm sick of going in everyday whilst the usual dossiers take the piss

Sounds reasonable. If you're going to operate with reduced staff levels you need your staff to show up as often as possible. Jobs will be cut. That's how the private sector works. If I was easy jet id say fine then. Union, you decide who goes and who stays. Otherwise STFU

And in the end you'll keep those on who's face fits and kisses the managers arse

How about someone who has been off sick due to a serious illness which they may have now recovered from but is a team player & works their butt off compared to someone who isn’t sick much but is lazy, sloppy, cuts corners & is difficult to work with due to lack of people skills?

Fair enough

simple business sense if you have to let people go you you do not sack your best employees

Exactly what I’d do in my own business and exactly what everyone else would do... if they wanted to survive that is

Human Rights

Fred often pulls sickies after heavy weekends. Janet hasn’t missed a day in 3 years. Who would you keep?

Standard practice most companies. You have to use some metric to decide

Not the only company doing this

Storm in a teacup. Crap. Nothing happened yet.

My company used that 20 years ago it’s not new

Well, ye. Why wouldn’t you. Get rid of the dead wood first, it’s standard practice. Unofficial of course.

🤷🏻‍♂️

Good luck with that one EasyJet.

It’s common

“Good evening ladies & gentlemen & welcome aboard this nonstop flight to your death because I’ve been up all night coughing, haven’t had a wink of sleep but I’m worried about keeping my job so came in anyway... fingers crossed!”

Pilots face large fines and even a prison sentence if caught flying when not fit to do so. This protects the public. What is happening here is a company looking to sack pilots for not breaking the law. Disgrace, should have its licence revoked.

There has always been criteria for large scale redundancies. In the 70's the unions always agreed to last in first out.

Punish unhealthy people. What a lovely policy.

That has to be illegal?

Usual practice. What would they prefer? All the trade union agitators first maybe?

All companies do this through some kind of HR tool.
