Don’t waste our time! Ireland lays down law in Brexit row as PM sends message to Frost northernirelandprotocol EuropeanUnion

MICHEAL Martin has sent a pointed message to Brexit Minister Lord David Frost as he called on the UK Government to 'engage seriously' with the package of measures outlined by European Commissioner Maros Sefcovic yesterday.

“Mostly people would speak about the sausages getting through to Northern Ireland, well now you know what, the sausages will get to Northern Ireland." Emphasising he and the European Commission are in"solution mode”, Mr Martin also paid tribute to Mr Sefcovic for how he and the European Commission have handled post-Brexit issues, saying:"It's been a sincere, hard-working and very sensitive and committed approach.Lord Frost urged the EU to look carefully at the UK's new legal text, and said the existing protocol could not survive, as it did not have support right across Northern Ireland.Micheal Martin factfile (Image: Express) "Maros Sefcovic has really consulted with people all around.More info When the Brexit minister outlined his proposals for a renegotiation of the treaty in July, it took the Commission less than two hours to publicly condemn the plans. His engagement with the Irish Government to get a sense of things, he went north and spoke to people on the ground in Northern Ireland and business and industry, and politically met with all the parties."We would not go down this route gratuitously or with any particular pleasure but it is our fundamental responsibility to safeguard peace and prosperity in Northern Ireland and that is why we cannot rest until this situation is addressed," said Lord Frost." Mr Coveney, meanwhile, who earlier this week clashed with Lord Frost on Twitter over the issue, released a statement yesterday in which he likewise welcomed Mr Sefcovic’s announcements. The EU has also turned down UK requests to allow pets to move freely between the province and the mainland under the EU’s pet passport scheme.

Mr Coveney said: “These bespoke solutions make it easier for Northern Irish businesses to move goods into Northern Ireland while at the same time continuing to benefit from all the advantages of full access to the EU single market. The first is that Lord Frost's hard line on the European Court of Justice (ECJ) is standard pre-negotiation tactics, aimed at grinding out another concession or two.It means chilled meats such as British bangers can continue to be enjoyed by those in the province.Leo Varadkar, Ireland's former Taoiseach (Image: GETTY) Trending “These proposals represent a real opportunity for Northern Ireland.People in Northern Ireland – especially those in the business community – want the Protocol to work well. The UK government wants to remove the ECJ from its oversight role as part of the Northern Ireland Protocol, saying as long as it continues the protocol will never survive. They see the very real opportunities presented by the Protocol and want these to be fully realised. The bloc may hate it, but once again Lord Frost's threat to go for the nuclear option has worked.” He added: “We welcome David Frost’s comments that he will engage seriously, fully and positively with the Commission.Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney has warned that the UK's demands on the protocol could cause "a breakdown in relations" with the EU." They added the threat of the UK triggering Article 16 - enabling it to suspend parts of the protocol - would now be put off while the negotiations played out through to November.

The package provides a pathway to resolving all the outstanding issues.“Now is the time for the UK Government to engage constructively on the practical solutions being put forward by the Commission to the issues that matter most to the people of Northern Ireland.Under that scenario, the UK would go through the motions before triggering Article 16.Marcos Sefcovic caved to the UK on a series of demands (Image: No10/Sky) Now, the threat of triggering Article 16 to suspend aspects of the Northern Ireland Protocol has yielded results.” Related articles.
